Teen Feats

• Annie Elliott, 13, has earned the April Rising Star award from the Cascade School of Music. The award recognizes students in years one and two of private instruction who exhibit talent, effort and achievement. She is the daughter of Tim and Jennifer Elliott, of Bend, and voice student of Cullie Treichler.

• Summit High School competed at the State Speech and Debate Tournament April 20-22, taking second place. Miles Flynn, a senior, was a finalist in the Congress category. Nathan Lovejoy, a senior, was a semifinalist in the radio category. Blake Hardin, a junior, was a semifinalist in the prose category. Tomas Todd and Jake LaPlaca were octofinalists in public forum debate. Gabe Reed, a junior, is the new state champion in Lincoln-Douglas debate and in prose, which earned him a spot to compete at the national tournament. He was also a finalist in poetry. Reese Ringo, a senior, will compete in the World Schools Debate at the national tournament as well.

• Coe Williams, of Summit High School, won the Algebra I category at the Central Oregon Math Contest. Ashley Hendricks, of Mountain View High School, took second and Kiley Prinz, of Summit, Ella Frank, of Bend High School, and Felicity Kostka, of Madras High School, tied for third.

• Delany Sazama, of La Pine High School, won the Geometry category at the COMC. Ava Rupp, of Bend, and Caleb Meyers, of Mountain View, tied for second and Tommy Rohde, of La Pine, and Laine Bohnert, of Cascades Academy, tied for third.

• Noa Gilbert, of Mountain View, won the Algebra II category at the COMC. William Best, of La Pine, and Sofia Pardo, of Ridgeview High School, tied for second and Grace Miedziak, of Summit, won third.

• Henry Sprout, of Mountain View, won the advanced math category at the COMC. Katie Slough, also of Mountain View, won second and Michael Hefley, of La Pine, won third.

• Gabe Reed, of Summit, won the Calculus category at the COMC. Josh Taylor, of Mountain View, won second and Matthew Thomas, of Ridgeview, won third.

Military Notes

Capt. Michael Lewis, of Bend, relieved Capt. Brian Humm, of Park Ridge, Illinois, as commodore of the submarine squadron 19, which is responsible for manning, training and equipping two guided-missile submarines and all ballistic-missile submarines undergoing maintenance in the Puget Sound naval shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility.
