- Thomas Tyner, shown playing for the Oregon Ducks in 2015, is hoping to return next season with the Oregon State Beavers.
CORVALLIS — Before Thomas Tyner makes any moves, he is going to finish the school year at the University of Oregon.
Tyner, a former star running back at Aloha High School in Beaverton who played two seasons at Oregon before shoulder injuries forced him to medically retire from football, is attempting to make a comeback with Oregon State. Tyner should be eligible to play because he spent two years out of competition.

He played in the Ducks’ 2015 spring game before redshirting that season and eventually retiring.
“He wanted to start playing again so we started to put things in motion,” said John Tyner, Thomas’ father. “Oregon granted his release (last) Saturday morning.”
There is some unfinished business at UO. Tyner is taking 12 units this quarter. He plans to focus on his schoolwork until classes end in mid-June. Then the process of joining the Oregon State football team can begin in earnest.
John Tyner said Thomas visited Oregon State on Tuesday and met with some of the football staff. He also went through medical testing to make sure his shoulders are OK and he is in sound shape in general.
“I think he passed all the medical with flying colors,” John Tyner said. As it stands, Thomas Tyner would have one season to play at OSU, though that could be adjusted, according to John Tyner. “Theoretically, he could try to get a medical waiver for one of the years (at UO),” John Tyner said.
