M. Douglas Hogland, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and one of the oldest living former NFL players passed away on March 4, 2017.

Doug was born May 8, 1931, to Frank and Minnie Hogland in Farmington, New Mexico. Doug’s siblings were Frankie Jean (Rastovich), Gerald (Red), Wesley, and Gordon. In 1942, the Hogland family moved to Bend, Oregon, where the “Hogland Boys” became infamous in Central Oregon.

Doug graduated from Bend High School in 1949, a star athlete in basketball and football.

At Oregon State College (now OSU), Doug was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He played one year of basketball and 3 years of football, was voted All-Coast Tackle 3 years in a row and received the President’s trophy for being the school’s top scholar/athlete.

Doug’s NFL career began with the San Francisco 49ers in 1953. He also played for the Chicago Cardinals and Detroit Lions before retiring from pro football in 1959.

Doug’s teaching and coaching career began in Tillamook with the Job Corps, then Tillamook High School, where he was head football coach, as well as assistant in basketball and wrestling. Following Tillamook High School, Doug continued his teaching career with the Oregon Youth Authority at Camp Tillamook.

Doug married Joanne Alice Cole in 1955. They had six children; Elizabeth, Jessica, Matthew, Catherine, Caroline, and Margaret.

Doug is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Frankie; brothers, Gerald and Wesley; wife, Joanne; and daughter, Caroline Josi. He is survived by his brother, Gordon; his daughters, Elizabeth (Raymond), Jessica (Gary), Catherine (Parry), and Margaret; and his son, Matthew (Sanae); as well as grandchildren, Nicholas, Michael, Justin, Julia, Christopher, Cecelia, Hugh and Cole; and great-grandchildren, Elijah, lsabelle, Audrey, Mia, Oliver, Enzo, Tristan, Albert, and Padrig.

A celebration of Doug’s life will be held Saturday, June 10, 2017, at 3:00 pm at the Officer’s Mess Hall at the Port of Tillamook.
