Bend-La Pine school transfer requests due soon

Bend High School on NE Sixth Street would get a major upgrade if voters approve a bond measure on the Nov. 8 ballot.

The Bend-La Pine Schools deadline for families who want to send their children to schools outside of their neighborhood starting in September is quickly approaching.

Change requests are due March 1 for grades one through 12. Change requests for kindergarten are due May 1.

Students are generally expected to attend the school in the neighborhood their parents or guardians live in, according to Bend-La Pine’s website. This allows the school district to balance attendance. But when “unusual circumstances or special needs exist” the school district considers exceptions, according to its site.

Change requests are generally granted if there is space available at the requested school, according to the district.

Because of high enrollment at Bend High, though, that school will only consider change requests for incoming freshmen and incoming juniors who want to participate in Bend High’s full diploma International Baccalaureate program.

Those already attending Bend High on an approved attendance area change request don’t need to reapply, but their status will be reviewed. Once enrollment numbers are firm, which may not occur until late August, families will be notified if their requests have been approved.

More information on transfer requests, as well as the application, can be found online at j.mp/BLPtransfer.
