REDMOND — With less than 10 seconds remaining Wednesday night, McKaylie Capps had already scored 18 points for Redmond High — seven of them in the fourth quarter. She had the hot hand for the Panthers and rose for a 3-pointer.
Though the attempt was off the mark, Capps was fouled. Ridgeview held a 12-point lead at one point but watched on as Capps went to the free-throw line for a chance to tie the game.
Capps, however, made only two of her three foul shots, and on the next possession, Ridgeview’s Macy McFetridge was fouled and made both free throws to secure for the host Ravens a 48-45 Intermountain Conference girls basketball victory.
Redmond (3-5 IMC, 8-9 overall) took the loss despite the late-game efforts of Capps, who scored almost half of her 20 points in the final quarter, and Ava Kitchin, who scored six of her 16 points in the fourth.
“They were trying to put the team on their backs, but we’d built up a cushion in that second quarter,” Ravens coach Randi Davis said, referring to the period in which her team outscored the Panthers 21-13.
McFetridge and Ashley Hall each scored 10 points for the Ravens (3-5, 5-11), and Adrienne Wilcox and Aspen Jeter each scored eight. Jeter also had 18 rebounds.
“It was a big game,” Davis said. “If (the Panthers) would’ve won, they would’ve locked up third place in the IMC.”
Instead, Redmond and Ridgeview are tied for third in the conference standings, and both have a chance at reaching postseason play. Their final regular season matchup is scheduled for Feb. 21.
