‘HIDDEN FIGURES’

Rating: PG for thematic elements and some language.

What it’s about: Depicts the true story of the African-American women who worked as mathematicians and engineers at NASA during the space race in the 1960s.

The kid attractor factor: The uplifting and inspiring true story and lighthearted tone are a great draw for families and kids.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Stand up for yourself and what you know to be right, ask for credit when it’s deserved, and remember that some rules are made to be broken.

Violence: None.

Language: Some strong-ish language from an exasperated Mr. Harrison at NASA.

Sexuality: A kiss during a courtship, some comments about attractiveness of men.

Drugs: Moonshine drinking

Parents advisory: A definite crowd-pleaser that will inspire audiences at any age and appropriate for kids of all ages. Should be required watching for junior high and high school students.

‘ROGUE ONE:
A STAR WARS STORY’

Rating: PG-13 for extended sequences of sci-fi violence and action.

What it’s about: A stand-alone installment in the Star Wars canon, “Rogue One” follows the Rebel Alliance as they attempt to stop the Empire’s world-destroying weapon.

The kid-attractor factor: Well, it is a “Star Wars” movie, so your kids might be a little bit excited. Stormtroopers and droids and Darth Vader and more.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Always stand up to tyranny, fascism and those who impose their will with violence. The fight is bigger than any individual. You have to have hope.

Violence: This is a very dark and gritty installment, and the third act is a wildly violent shoot-’em-up. There are several on screen deaths, ship crashes, apocalyptic explosions, etc.

Language: None

Sexuality: None

Drugs: None

Parents advisory: Though it’s not bloody, it really is quite violent.

This guide, compiled by film critic Katie Walsh, is published here every Friday. It should be used with the MPAA rating system for selecting movies suitable for children.
