- Submitted photoMoana (voice of Auli‘i Cravalho), right, is determined to sail out on a daring mission to save her people in Disney’s “Moana.”
“MOANA”
Rating: PG for peril, some scary images and brief thematic elements.
What it’s about: A young girl on a Pacific Island sets off beyond the reef to return the heart of the goddess Te Fiti, which was stolen by the mischievous demi-god Maui.
The kid-attractor factor: It’s the latest Disney animated feature — it’s the kid movie event of the year.
Good lessons/bad lessons: Be your own hero — you don’t have to wait for someone else to do it. You can choose to do the right thing instead of being chosen to do it. Be strong, smart, capable and kind.
Violence: There are some harrowing scenes as Moana and Maui battle a giant crab, escape coconut pirates and ultimately face down the lava monster Taka.
Language: None
Sexuality: None
Drugs: None
Parents advisory: Will be the new favorite film of kids of all ages.
“BAD SANTA 2”
Rating: R for crude sexual content and language throughout, and some graphic nudity.
What it’s about: Billy Bob Thornton’s irascible, offensive Willy is back to besmirch the honor of the red and white suit.
The kid-attractor factor: Perhaps the “Santa” in the title will be alluring to some kids? The raunchy humor will definitely be a draw for teenagers.
Good lessons/bad lessons: You know how the Grinch’s heart grew three sizes? So does Bad Santa’s. Redemption is possible. And if the family you get doesn’t work out, you can always pick your own. Family is what you make of it.
Violence: Billy Bob Thornton clocks Kathy Bates in the face, and there are plenty more sucker punches, pratfalls, shootings and running over where that came from.
Language: The language is probably the most offensive part of the film — not only is every sentence riddled with cursing and gross-out sex humor, but the offensive jabs and insults are truly low.
Sexuality: There’s a lot of sex but none of it is particularly sexy. Willy engages in several different graphic encounters with different women but there’s no sexual nudity, just a shot of The Kid, Thurman’s bare behind.
Drugs: Lots and lots of drinking.
Parents advisory: While teens might like their Santas more naughty than nice, the offensive language and sexual content are for mature audiences only.
