Summit retained its unblemished Intermountain Conference record with a convincing 6-0 boys soccer win Thursday at Mountain View.

“We want to dominate the IMC,” Summit midfielder Florian Costa said, “and right now we are right on track.”

The Storm (4-0 IMC, 9-1 overall) posted their third straight shutout and sixth this season, scoring early and often en route to a 4-0 halftime lead.

“We wanted to jump on them early and we did that,” Summit coach Ron Kidder said. “Sometimes it doesn’t work out totally well for you because guys can lay off a bit, but we established ourselves early on and kept the intensity up.”

Cole Abbott broke through on the left side in the first minute for the Storm and slid the ball past Cougars keeper Jaden Johnson. Ten minutes later, Ivan Kufeldt placed a corner kick that bobbled in front of the net before Costa poked it past the keeper to make it 2-0.

“When we possess the ball, we really want to do good tactical things and create scoring opportunities,” Kidder said. “Collectively, we did a good job creating those opportunities.”

The Class 5A No. 6-ranked Storm’s third goal came from Mack van der Velde, when he flicked a cross from Quilin Peters into the back of the net in the 21st minute. Two minutes later, van der Velde’s cross to the middle found Ragnar Schmidt who completed the scoring play to give Summit its 4-0 lead.

“Last season, we didn’t score as many goals and might have averaged two goals a game,” van der Velde said. “Now we are averaging four or five and our defense is shutting people out. It’s a good season.”

The second half saw a Mountain View defense that was much calmer, Cougars coach Jerry Jimenez noted.

“This is the first time we played with five defenders in the back,” he explained, “and we just tried to play a little more defensively minded this time.”

The focused defense was led by Johnson and fellow keeper Joshua Hurtado, who combined for 26 saves.

“It shows that those guys didn’t quit,” Jimenez praised. “Sure, they let six (goals) get past them, but they had 20 really good saves too.”

Both teams battled for possession for nearly 20 minutes in the second half before Ben Brocker broke through for the Storm. His attempted cross cleared the outstretched fingers of Hurtado for Summit’s fifth goal.

“Playing a high-quality team like Summit,” Jimenez said, “I think we played really well but I’m not surprised where we ended up.”

In the 70th minute, Max Asevedo dribbled from the corner to the front right post of Mountain View’s goal, and a pass in front of the net was blasted home by van der Velde to seal Summit’s 6-0 win.

“It’s a good feeling senior year because we want to win everything,” van der Velde said after the win.

Mountain View (1-2-1, 1-7-1) turns its attention to Ridgeview, as Tuesday’s game in Redmond could be a deciding factor in the Cougars’ bid for a postseason berth.

“Our playoff hopes are kind of hanging in the balance there, so hopefully we can get the away win because that would really increase our chances,” Jimenez said.

The Storm’s Joseph Hicks finished with five saves in goal.

“The defense has been strong all year and they are really calm,” Kidder said. “Today, when they (the Cougars) had opportunities, we had good pressure and good support from up top.”
