Matthieu Lakes Loop

The Cascade foothills west of Sisters near McKenzie Pass are home to some incredibly scenic trails that take us deep into the mountains. Some are demanding all-day hikes, and a few others are half-day commitments that are relatively easy. The Matthieu Lakes Loop, about a 45-minute drive from Bend, is a fairly short, moderate, family-friendly trek. The loop includes the North Matthieu Lake Trail and part of the Pacific Crest Trail in the Three Sisters Wilderness. At South Matthieu Lake, hikers are treated to views of massive, craggy North Sister.

Difficulty: Easy to moderate, 800 feet of elevation gain over 6 miles.

Getting there: From Sisters, turn left onto the Old McKenzie Pass Highway (state Highway 242). Just after milepost 78, turn left by the sign for Lava Camp Lake. Drive down the gravel road for a few hundred yards and look for a parking area on the right side. If you get to Dee Wright Observatory, you have gone too far.

Cost: Northwest Forest Pass or $5 day-use fee.
