Westin to build first hotel in Bend

A 100-suite, extended-stay hotel slated for a vacant site at NW Wall Street and NE Olney Avenue, across from Pioneer Park in Bend, will carry the Element by Westin brand, according to an announcement by InnSight Hotel Management Group in Springfield.

The announcement indicates a new degree of certainty for the 3-acre site, for which multiple concepts have been created and abandoned over the past few years.

“We are committed to building the hotel on the site,” said Richard Boyles, president of InnSight as well as a principal in the development company, Sycan B Corp.

An entity controlled by Sycan, 1526 NWW LLC, bought the property for $2.1 million in January from the city of Bend with the intent to build a hotel. Boyles said it took longer than he expected to land a franchise agreement because of a pending merger between Westin owner Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide and Marriott International. The merger was completed Friday.

InnSight manages 12 hotels in Oregon and Washington, with six others slated to open later this year or next year, according to a news release.

The Element Bend will be the first Westin property in Bend, according to InnSight. Element is an eco-friendly, millennial-focused brand, Boyles said.

The four-story hotel, expected to be 64,000-68,000 square feet, will be part of a larger development at 1526 NW Wall St. The preliminary site plan includes two 3,000-square-foot retail and restaurant buildings at the corner of Wall and Olney, Boyles said.

From 1966-2000, the property was home to The Bulletin. Brooks Resources Corp. owned it until 2002, according to Deschutes County property records. Brooks sold it to Taylor Brothers LLC, which sold it to the city of Bend for $4.78 million in 2005.
