We continue to be in the peak of the summer season, and visitors are going to the lakes and rivers to escape the heat. Expect very high use at Green Lake, Devil’s Lake, Sparks Lake, Todd Lake and Moraine Lake. Parking is limited, so plan ahead and get there early to ensure you can park in a permitted area.
If you are camping at any of the Deschutes Forest sites and you are not familiar with the campsite, make sure to get there early enough to set up in the light. Some of the campsites are difficult to find after dark, and wilderness rangers will cite people who are camping outside of the designated sites.
Tumalo Mountain is another great hike to try, with a short steep incline and a beautiful view of the Cascade Mountains at the top.
One low-use trail to try is the Lake Creek Trail stretching from Suttle Lake to Camp Sherman; it is hiker/biker/equestrian-friendly, and one segment has trails specifically for horse users. Cultus Lake and Little Cultus Lake are also options if you would like to practice your kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding without as heavy of a crowd.
Dog leash regulations are in place in some segments of the wilderness trails, including Todd Lake Trail, Broken Top Trail, Soda Creek Trail, Green Lakes Trail, Green Lakes Basin and Moraine Lake Trail up to its intersection with the South Sister Climber Trail.
The Flagline Bike Trail is closed until Aug. 15. The Upper Flagline Trail and some of the Metolius Windigo Trail up to its intersection with the Flagline Tie are also closed due to elk calving and big game restrictions.
If you’re looking for your next outing and you have free time on a weekday, you may want to take advantage and visit one of the popular destinations such as Lower Rosary Lake, Wychus Creek, Tumalo Falls or Sparks Lake when they’re likely to be less crowded.
Remember to practice proper use courtesy on trails and campgrounds; clean up after yourself and be respectful of other users. Don’t forget your sunscreen and bug repellent this weekend!
