DIY: Infinity scarf

If you love the versatility of fashion accessories, you’ll definitely need to have an assortment of infinity scarves to complete your wardrobe looks.

So called because it’s a sewn circle, the infinity scarf can be made in myriad fabrics — from soft, cozy fleece to luxurious silks or handwovens. T-shirt knits lend a more casual air, as do flannel plaids. The fabric will help determine the scarf’s function as well — whether you’re using it for warmth on an outdoor trek or as a fashion accessory for indoor glamour.

Infinity scarves can be made in a range of sizes, from 24 inches in circumference to just fit over your head to 72 inches for multiple wrappings or wearing as a scarf/hoodie combination.

So put your sewing skills to work and make a whole wardrobe of scarves.

What you’ll need:

Instructions are given for a 60-inch scarf; adjust fabric requirement for other sizes and fabric widths.

• 2⁄3 yard fabric, 60 inches wide

• Basic sewing supplies

Cutting:

Cut the scarf rectangle 22 inches by 60 inches (or whatever length you prefer).

Assembly:

1. Fold the scarf rectangle in half, right sides together, matching the long raw edges.

2. Sew the long edges together using a ¼-inch seam. Press the seam open.

3. Push one end of the rectangle through the tube so the open circular ends meet each other and the seam location matches.

4. With raw edges matched, sew around the circular opening, leaving 3 inches unstitched. Note: On heavier fabrics like fleece, a larger opening may be needed for turning.

5. Turn the entire scarf through the seam opening.

6. Hand-stitch the opening closed.

How to wear:

A. Pull the scarf over your head and crush around your neck, pulling it to shape.

B. Pull the scarf over your head, twist and pull it over your head again, adjusting the two tubular layers around the neck.

C. Holding the scarf in its flat position, place it behind your neck. Pull one end through the loop on the other end and adjust as desired.

D. Pull the scarf over your head. Using an elasticized ponytail holder, insert the elastic loop over the scarf hanging portion and adjust it to add shape to the free-hanging portion. Add a pin or brooch, if desired, for embellishment.

E. To wear the scarf as a hood, wrap it at the neckline, twist and then pull up the upper layer to fit over the head and back neck area.

F. On longer lightweight scarves, loop the scarf around your neck, then tie the ends into a looped knot.
