A driver who crossed the center line and ended up crashing into a power pole in Terrebonne this afternoon says she fell asleep at the wheel, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office. As a result of the crash, more than 300 residents in the area are still without power, which is expected to be restored as soon as 6:30 p.m.
Deputies responded to a report of a crash at 2:15 p.m. on NW 19th Street just north of Odem Avenue in Terrebonne, according to the release from Sgt. Kevin Dizney. Officers found that a purple 2014 Kia Sorento had been southbound on 19th Street when the driver, Vanisha Shuey, 25, of Terrebonne crossed the center line and the oncoming lane of traffic. The Kia went off the east shoulder of the road before hitting a power pole. The vehicle continued through barbed wire fencing before coming to rest in an open field.
Shuey “admitted to falling asleep at the wheel and driving off the road causing the crash,” and there were no indications drugs or alcohol were involved, the release said.
Shuey was not injured in the crash, according to the sheriff’s office.
Officers found she didn’t have a driver license. She was arrested for an unrelated parole violation, cited for driving without a license and lodged at the Deschutes County jail.
Because the power pole was “sheared off” and power lines were left dangling near the roadway, Pacific Power had to cut power in the vicinity to make repairs, Dizney wrote.
