Soldier Songs & Voices hosts benefit for Wounded Warrior Homes in Bend

At a recent monthly meeting of the Oregon Military Support Network in Bend, Marine Corps Maj. Justin Farrar revealed something that got Bill Valenti thinking. Farrar’s assignment in Bend is to look after combat veterans in the Pacific Northwest — Oregon, Washington, Idaho and northern California.

“He started talking about how cuts in congressional budgets have made it really difficult for him to support all the people in his geographical area,” said Valenti, organizer of the local chapter of Soldier Songs & Voices. “And everyone said, ‘Well, that just sucks.”

Since starting up in 2013, Soldier Songs has used music to help veterans share their stories and raise awareness. In that spirit, Valenti and Farrar organized the first Soldier Songs concert at the Tower Theatre on Tuesday. In addition to raising awareness, the show will raise funds for Wounded Warrior Homes Inc. (www.woundedwarriorhomes.org), a nonprofit that helps provide transitional housing to combat veterans with traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress.

Portland-based Texas native Beth Wood, whose soulful songwriting has been featured on the 2011 TV documentary series “Troubadour, TX,” will headline the show. Local acts StrongHold Trio, Mark Quon (a co-organizer of Soldier Songs in Bend) and Loose Gravel (a country-rock group formed at the early Soldier Songs meetings) will open the show.

Soldier Songs Presents: Beth Wood and StrongHold Trio, with Loose Gravel, Mark Quon; 7 p.m. Tuesday; $25, $30, all proceeds to www.woundedwarriorhomes.org; Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St., Bend; www.towertheatre.org or 541-317-0700. —Brian McElhiney
