The end is near on Syfy series ‘Haven’

Q: I heard that “Haven” was canceled. If so, why are new episodes on now?

— Scott Rhodes, Columbus, Ohio

A: What’s currently being shown is the back half of the “super-sized” fifth season that began running last year, before it was known this would be the Emily Rose-starring Syfy series’ last stand. Those episodes will run through mid-December, and that will be all for the Stephen King-inspired show. The first half of Season 5 already is available on DVD and Blu-ray, with the rest all but certain to follow on home video next year.

Q: Didn’t Patricia Heaton have another series besides “Everybody Loves Raymond” and “The Middle”?

— Susan Brooks, Providence, Rhode Island

A: Several. She played Linda Lavin’s daughter in the early 1990s sitcom “Room for Two,” she was in the short-lived 1995 “Designing Women” spinoff “Women of the House,” and she teamed with Kelsey Grammer in the 2007-08 television-news comedy “Back to You.” And concurrent with her seventh ABC season of “The Middle,” she’s on the culinary trail as the host of Food Network’s new “Patricia Heaton Parties.”

Q: We really loved watching the show “Home Free.” Will it be back next summer? And how can we get Mike Holmes to renovate our home?

— Virginia Smith, via e-mail

A: As of this writing, Fox hadn’t made a decision yet on bringing the show back for a second season. If that happens, though, the network likely will invite viewers to submit applications to be contestants. Of course, the object of that show is for participants to do their own renovations under Holmes’ guidance. If you’re interested in that, we’d advise keeping an eye on the show’s official website, which is still up: http://www.fox.com/home-free.

Q: I was watching the movie “Serendipity” on cable and thought I saw Bridget Moynahan of “Blue Bloods” in it. Was that her?

— Joan Garrett,

Ormond Beach, Florida

A: It certainly was. Television initially helped Moynahan make the transition from modeling to acting, when she played Mr. Big’s (Chris Noth) pre-Carrie wife Natasha on “Sex and the City.” She got considerable movie work off that role, including her “Serendipity” role as John Cusack’s fiancee. Her other films have included “Coyote Ugly,” “The Sum of All Fears,” “The Recruit,” “I, Robot,” “Ramona and Beezus,” “Battle Los Angeles” and “John Wick.” Moynahan also had a series run on ABC’s “Six Degrees” during the 2006-07 season.

Q: I think it’s very cool that Jay Leno is showing his cars and others’ in a series now. How many does he have in his own collection?

— Jeff Rhodes, via e-mail

A: During a press conference for his CNBC show “Jay Leno’s Garage,” he said he has roughly 135 cars and 120 motorcycles. Those numbers are ever-shifting, though, since he deals for additional vehicles fairly regularly. He notes that he hears frequently from people who know of his passion, including relatives of deceased people who prized their cars. Leno says that if he’s interested, “You work out a price that’s commensurate, that’s fair for everybody.”

It’s interesting to note that he was a guest recently on ABC’s “Last Man Standing,” whose star Tim Allen is among the guests on “Jay Leno’s Garage.” The part clearly was tailored to Leno, who played a man who sold his cherished car as a gift for Allen’s character — and then kept showing up, since he couldn’t let it go easily.

Q: I was surprised to see that Clarissa Ward was leaving CBS, where she seemed to be one of their star reporters, for CNN. Why?

—Mark Anderson, Knoxville, Tennessee

A: Without knowing all the specific ins and outs, we can speculate that in addition to what must have been a pay offer appropriate to Emmy, Peabody, DuPont and Edward R. Murrow Award winner Ward’s experience and industry profile, the 24/7 news nature of CNN offers that much more time for someone’s work to be seen — particularly when it comes to global issues, Ward’s beat. Not only does the parent CNN offer that opportunity, so does sister network CNN International.
