Jon Stewart won’t be ‘Daily’ much longer

Q: When is Jon Stewart’s last program on “The Daily Show”?

— Mike Grant, Grand Junction, Colorado

A: Aug. 6 is the date of his final taping for the Comedy Central program, which will wrap up a 17-year run for him. It’s guaranteed to be quite an event; we often ask celebrities which shows they like to record and watch, and we’d estimate that at least three out of five times, “The Daily Show” is on that list.

As for Stewart’s successor, Trevor Noah will assume that job Sept. 28 — thus helping to make that a major month for changings of the guards in late-night television, since Stephen Colbert officially will inherit David Letterman’s former role on CBS’ “Late Show” on Sept. 8.

Q: I would like to know why Danny Pino left “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” Also, I would like to know if “Rush” will be returning.

— Sharon Hurley, Palm Coast, Florida

A: Executive producer Warren Leight has said that both Pino and his character, Detective Nick Amaro, had wanted to “spread his wings” … thus the decision for the actor to exit the NBC drama in last season’s finale. He reportedly played a major role creatively in helping to determine how the situation would be handled, and it’s been suggested that the door is open if he’d like to return, though that likely would be on a guest-starring basis.

As for “Rush,” USA Network decided to discontinue it after its one and only season last year. A couple of its principal actors have moved on to other projects; Tom Ellis has been cast in next season’s comic-book-inspired Fox series “Lucifer,” and Odette Annable currently is appearing as Trudy Cooper in ABC’s new Thursday show “The Astronaut Wives Club.”

Q: Do you have any idea when the final season of “Glee” will be out on DVD?

— Cathy Murphy, via email

A: Yes, we do. Now. The Fox show’s last stanza was released on home video in mid-May, and there are two ways you can purchase it on disc — either as that one separate season or as part of a “Complete Series” set that’s loaded with extras.

Q: When will “Secrets and Lies” be back? And is “Longmire” coming back?

— Joyce Thompson, Wilmore, Kentucky

A: ABC has renewed “Secrets and Lies” for another midseason start, but its second season will be without Ryan Phillippe since the mystery surrounding his character was resolved in the first round. Juliette Lewis will be back as Detective Cornell, but she’ll be surrounded by a new cast and new characters, led by Michael Ealy (recently seen in the last season of Fox’s “The Following”) as a privileged man whose wife is murdered.

New episodes of “Longmire” evidently remain on track to make their Netflix debut later this year, after the modern Western mystery’s first three seasons ran on A&E Network. The streaming service had not confirmed a premiere date at the time of this writing, and series co-star Katee Sackhoff indicated in a recent tweet to a fan that it could be as soon as August or September … but she added, “No guarantees, though.”

Q: I know that Melissa Benoist will be TV’s new Supergirl and that she was on “Glee,” but what did she do before that show?

— Tom Jennings, Youngstown, Ohio

A: Primed to be one of the upcoming season’s major stars thanks to her high visibility as CBS’ Girl of Steel, the actress has considerable theater work in her background, having appeared in productions of such shows as “The Sound of Music,” “Bye Bye Birdie,” “A Chorus Line” and “Evita.”

Before her “Glee” television stint, Benoist had appeared in episodes of “Homeland,” “Blue Bloods,” “The Good Wife” and a couple of the “Law & Order” series. And her movie credits, while sparse, also haven’t been too shabby; she has appeared opposite J.K. Simmons in his Oscar-winning role in “Whiplash,” with Al Pacino and Annette Bening in “Danny Collins,” and in the screen adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks story “The Longest Ride.”
