Cowlitz’s Casey Henderson hit a grand slam off Bend Elks reliever Ryan Mets in the top of the fifth inning, and the Elks lost 10-6 Sunday at Vince Genna Stadium to snap a 10-game West Coast League winning streak.
The Elks (17-4) had not lost since June 16.
Starter Nate Hunter (1-1) was pulled after allowing a run-scoring double to Bowen Ogata, and Mets walked Isaac Benard to load the bases. The Black Bears (9-9) added another run in the six-run inning to take a 7-2 lead.
Henderson had a solo homer in the fourth off Hunter and a two-run single in the eighth off Jeff Albrecht to finish with seven RBIs. The Black Bears totaled 17 hits in winning the last of a three-game series.
J.D. Larimer, a Crook County High product, had a pair of run-scoring singles, and Cooper Hummel had an RBI-double to lead the Elks.
Hunter allowed four runs on seven hits in 41⁄3 innings, Mets allowed three runs and allowed all three batters he faced on base, and Newman allowed two runs on seven hits in three innings. Albrecht and Daniel Bies closed the game out for the Elks, who have allowed 10 or more runs three times this season — all to the Black Bears.
The Elks travel to Klamath Falls for a three-game series beginning Tuesday.
