BASEBALL
Mariners get OF Trumbo in 6-player trade — The slumping Seattle Mariners acquired Mark Trumbo from the Arizona Diamondbacks as part of a six-player trade in the hopes of boosting their struggling offense. The teams announced the trade Wednesday after each had finished off a day game. The Mariners lost 3-1 to the Yankees, while the Diamondbacks beat Atlanta 9-8. Seattle landed Trumbo and left-handed pitcher Vidal Nuno in exchange for catcher Welington Castillo, right-hander Dominic Leone and minor league prospects Gabby Guerrero and Jack Reinheimer. Trumbo hit .259 with nine home runs and 23 RBIs for the Diamondbacks, playing 40 of his 46 games in right field. He gives the Mariners a right-handed power bat to complement Nelson Cruz and help balance their lefty-heavy lineup. Trumbo’s addition should also provide an opportunity for Seattle to use Cruz at designated hitter more often.
Washington State hires former OSU assistant — Former Oregon State assistant coach Marty Lees was named the head coach at Washington State on Wednesday. Lees replaces the fired Donnie Marbut and is the 15th head coach in program history. He spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State and the previous 11 at Oregon State. In those 14 years, he has coached 10 teams that have reached the NCAA Tournament, including two national champions with the Beavers.
GOLF
LSU tops Southern Cal for NCAA men’s title — Ben Taylor made a tricky 8-foot par putt on the 18th hole Wednesday at The Concession in Bradenton, Florida, to give LSU a 4-1 win over Southern California for its first NCAA golf championship in 60 years. Taylor, from England, helped Nova Southeastern win the 2012 Division II title before transferring to LSU. Southern Cal missed a chance for its first team title.
HORSE RACING
American Pharoah draws No. 5 post — American Pharoah was made the early 3-5 favorite Wednesday to win the Belmont Stakes and become horse racing’s first Triple Crown winner in 37 years. The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner drew the No. 5 post position for Saturday’s 1½-mile race at Belmont Park. Fourteen horses have won from there, including 1977 Triple Crown champion Seattle Slew.
SOFTBALL
Florida wins 2nd straight NCAA title — Florida won its second straight national championship behind Lauren Haeger’s complete game in a 4-1 victory over Michigan on Wednesday night in Oklahoma City. Haeger allowed five hits and struck out five. She reached base on all four of her plate appearances. Florida became just the third program to repeat as Women’s College World Series champion, and the first since Arizona in 2006-07.
