Ravens win twice at spring break tourney

For teams arriving at Bend’s Skyline Sports Complex on Monday morning for the first day of the Central Oregon Spring Break Softball Tournament, there was not much “spring” to speak of.

Instead, they were greeted by a blanket of snow on the outfield grass and an occasional squall of wintry precipitation. But that would not deter 18 teams from beginning the two-day tournament.

Ridgeview kicked off the tourney with back-to-back victories, including its second win over a Class 6A team already this season.

Four Ravens drove in at least two runs in their opener, led by Shawna Marshall, who was 3-for-5 with two RBIs in Ridgeview’s 10-3 win over Marshfield. Brook Herrington went 3-for-4 for Ridgeview, and Paige Davis knocked in two runs.

Rachel Collins then went all seven innings in the circle, striking out six and allowing just three hits, against Sherwood in the Ravens’ second game of the day, and Ridgeview held off a late Bowmen rally for a 4-3 win.

Hailey Williamson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Ravens (4-0), who led 4-1 before Sherwood scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Bend tried an unconventional pitching strategy in its first game, starting Megan Berrigan for the first two innings and replacing her with Allison Dahlgren for the next two innings before sending Berrigan back in. The Lava Bears jumped out to an 11-0 lead, but Sherwood hit Dahlgren hard, scoring six runs in the third inning and another three in the fourth before erasing Bend’s lead entirely with a six-run sixth en route to a 15-11 win.

Bend bounced back in its second matchup as Destiny Wagner held Marshfield to one run on five hits. Awbrie Elle Kinkade was 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Lacey Bunting hit two doubles of her own in the Bears’ 11-1 win.

Madras split its two games, downing Regis 12-2 before falling 5-4 to Corbett when the Cardinals scored the winning run on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh.

Chloe Martin struck out 12 batters in a six-inning four-hitter to lead the White Buffaloes (1-3) over Regis. Kianna Moschetti had four hits, and Kelsie Mitchell and Melissa Field had three apiece in the win.

Against Corbett, freshman Kiersten Anderson was effective in her first pitching start and Moschetti collected another three hits for the Buffs.

Crook County split its two games. But if not for two fifth-inning home runs by Corbett in the opener, the Cowgirls could just have easily won twice.

The Cowgirls scored five runs in the top of the second and led 6-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth. The Cardinals then belted a grand slam and a three-run homer to jump in front 8-6 en route to a 10-7 win.

Ashley Bond went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Crook County, while Aspen Christiansen finished 3-for-4. Mckuenzie McClintock was 2-for-2 for the Cowgirls, and Hailey Smith struck out eight in six innings.

In its second game, Crook County scored eight runs in the top of the first and cruised to a 21-0 win in five innings over Regis.

Karlee Hollis homered and tripled for the Cowgirls (3-2), and Taylor Hilderbrand blasted a home run. Ashley Elliott was 3-for-4 for Crook County, Matney Searcy had two hits, and Hollis, Hilderbrand and Christiansen each drove in three runs.

Sisters struggled, dropping its first game against Brookings-Harbor 17-9 before falling to Klamath Union 12-0 in five innings in the second contest. Haylie Hudson pitched both games for the Outlaws and went 3-for-4 at the plate against Brookings-Harbor, while Shayla Curtis hit a two-run double off the outfield fence. Anja Gnos hit a double and walked three times against the Bruins.

Redmond High won its morning matchup against North Salem, but the Panthers slipped to 1-3 on the season with an 8-2 loss to Ashland.

After being drubbed 23-8 in the first game of a doubleheader with Vernonia at Bend High, La Pine gained a split with a 13-1 triumph in the second game.

Vernonia broke the first contest open with a 14-run seventh. The Hawks got three hits each from Maddie Fisher and Micaela Miller and two each from Surayha Elbers and Brianna Millard in the opener.

La Pine turned things around in the second game to win in five innings. Skye Seymer had three hits, including a triple and two RBIs. Elbers also had three hits in the second game, as did Brenna Carpenter, who pitched all the way in both games for La Pine (2-2).
