BASEBALL

Less time on Hall of Fame ballots — The Baseball Hall of Fame announced changes to its voting procedure on Saturday, including reducing the length of time a retired player can stay on the ballot to a maximum of 10 years. The current length is 15 years. In the new format, after 10 years the players would move to the Era Committee system for review in perpetuity. Players who already have passed the 10 years mark will be grandfathered in on the ballot, meaning Don Mattingly (15th year in 2015), Alan Trammell (14th) and Lee Smith (13th) will all be allowed to stay for 15 years.

GOLF

Home-state winner in U.S. Junior Amateur — William Zalatoris won the U.S. Junior Amateur on Saturday, beating Davis Riley 5 and 3 in the 36-hole final at The Club at Carlton Woods at The Woodlands, Texas. The 17-year-old Zalatoris, from Plano, Texas, holed out from 115 yards for eagle on the 32nd hole — the par-4 14th on the Nicklaus Course — to take a 4-up lead and ended the match with a par win on the 33rd hole. The 17-year-old Riley, from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, finished second for the second straight year.

Filipino wins U.S. Girls’ Junior — Princess Mary Superal won the U.S. Girls’ Junior on Saturday to become the first Filipino winner in USGA play, beating Mexico’s Marijosse Navarro on the 37th hole. The 17-year-old Superal won the par-5 36th hole with a birdie to pull even and ended the match with a par on the first extra hole — the par-5 14th on Forest Highlands’ Meadows Course in Flagstaff, Arizona — after Navarro drove into the water.

FOOTBALL

49ers RB out with torn ACL — San Francisco 49ers running back Kendall Hunter’s season is over before it began. The 49ers confirmed Saturday that Hunter tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Friday’s practice. Hunter began training camp as the No. 2 running back behind Frank Gore. Hunter’s knee buckled awkwardly as he tried to make a move during a non-contact drill. He was able to walk off the field on his own before an MRI confirmed the tear. Hunter’s injury leaves former Oregon Duck LaMichael James, rookie Carlos Hyde, rehabbing Marcus Lattimore and Jewel Hampton as the most likely candidates to fill the void behind Gore.

BASEBALL

Giants trade for Peavy — The San Francisco Giants boosted their rotation for the stretch run by acquiring right-hander Jake Peavy from the Boston Red Sox on Saturday for a pair of minor league pitchers. The 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner will start tonight’s series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Giants made the deal without having to give up their top pitching prospect, Kyle Crick.

BASKETBALL

Love withdraws from Team USA — With no idea where he will be playing in the NBA next season, Kevin Love has withdrawn from this summer’s Team USA basketball roster. Love is in limbo while the Minnesota Timberwolves field offers for their three-time All-Star. Love is the latest All-Star to pull out of Team USA, which begins its training camp in Las Vegas next week to prepare for the FIBA World Cup in Spain. In recent weeks the Americans have lost Blake Griffin, LaMarcus Aldridge and NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard. They have 18 players remaining and will choose 12 for the final roster.
