49ers RB James, a former Duck, injures elbow — Another injury has struck the San Francisco 49ers’ running back corps, as LaMichael James got carted off the field with an apparently dislocated left elbow early in Sunday’s practice. James, who played for Oregon, could be out a month because of the dislocation, according to the NFL Network. James had just become a top contender for the No. 2 running back role Friday, once Kendall Hunter sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Injuries have struck James leading up to his two previous seasons. James sprained his left knee in last exhibition season’s finale at San Diego, and an ankle injury required him to get carted off the field in a 2012 exhibition at Houston.

BASKETBALL

Byron Scott says he will be new Lakers coach — Byron Scott told a CBS affiliate station Sunday that he is the Los Angeles Lakers’ new coach. Scott told KCBS-TV he has reached a deal with the Lakers, who haven’t had a coach since Mike D’Antoni resigned April 30. Yet the Lakers insisted they haven’t yet reached a deal to hire Scott, the longtime Lakers shooting guard. He has been a head coach with New Jersey, New Orleans and Cleveland. ESPN.com first reported Scott would take over the Lakers with a four-year, $17 million contract. Los Angeles finished 27-55 last season, compiling the most losses in the 16-time NBA champions’ history.

Millsap added to Team USA roster— Atlanta Hawks forward Paul Millsap was added to Team USA’s roster for the training camp that opens Monday in Las Vegas. Millsap averaged 17.9 points last season for Atlanta and was selected to the Eastern Conference All-Star team. USA Basketball also announced that Jimmy Butler will be unable to participate in the training camp because of a groin injury. Kevin Love, Blake Griffin, Portland’s LaMarcus Aldridge and NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard recently withdrew from the roster that will be cut to 12 for the FIBA World Cup in Spain.

Edwards leaving team after season — Roush-Fenway Racing says Carl Edwards is leaving the organization at the end of the season. The announcement Sunday was not unexpected. There has been talk for months that Edwards would be moving to Joe Gibbs Racing in 2015 to drive a new fourth car for the Toyota team. Roush officials did not comment on Edwards’ plans, but did announce its three-driver 2015 lineup. Greg Biffle and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will both return, and Trevor Bayne will move up from the Nationwide Series to a full-time Sprint Cup Series ride. Edwards will not be replaced next season. Edwards has been with Roush since 2003 and in the No. 99 Ford in the Cup Series since 2004. He has 67 career victories in NASCAR’s three national series.

Isner defends Atlanta title — Top-seeded John Isner overpowered Dudi Sela on Sunday to successfully defend his Atlanta Open title, blowing serve after serve past the 5-foot-9 Israeli player in a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Serving for the match, the 6-foot-10 Isner fell behind 30-0 before Sela sent a backhand into the net, and then watched almost helplessly as the American ripped three straight aces for the win. Isner finished with 15 aces to Sela’s two. Isner served beyond 140 mph on several occasions, while Sela was in the 115 mph range. Isner also crushed Sela’s second serves, which often traveled at around 80 mph, to win 61 percent of Sela’s second serves.

Cuevas wins Croatia Open — Uruguayan qualifier Pablo Cuevas beat defending champion Tommy Robredo of Spain 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday to win the Croatia Open final after ousting top-seeded Fabio Fognini of Italy earlier the same day. The second-seeded Robredo had two break points at 1-1 in the first set, but it was Cuevas who first broke in the sixth game for a 4-2 lead. Cuevas won his maiden ATP title earlier this month at the Swedish Open in Bastad. He is the second qualifier to win an ATP World Tour tournament this year after Slovakia’s Martin Klizan at Munich in May.

Andujar beats Monaco in Swiss Open — Pablo Andujar of Spain won his first title in more than two years on Sunday, beating Juan Monaco of Argentina 6-3, 7-5 in the Swiss Open final. It was the 71st-ranked Andujar’s third career title, all on clay courts. He also won at Casablanca, Morocco, in 2011 and 2012. Andujar got the only break in the first set to take a 5-3 lead and then held serve to close out the set.

Svitolina repeats as Baku Cup champion — Elena Svitolina of Ukraine successfully defended her title at the Baku Cup, defeating 2012 champion Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia in the final Sunday 6-1, 7-6 (2). The second-seeded Svitolina broke Jovanovski twice to capture the opening set in 22 minutes, then saved all three break points she faced in the second set before cruising in the tiebreaker. The 19-year-old Svitolina is the first teenager to win multiple WTA titles since Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova captured three at Monterrey and Istanbul in 2010 and again at Monterrey in 2011 before turning 20.
