Deaths of note from around the world:

Alexander Shulgin 88: Respected chemist famed for dusting off a decades-old recipe for the psychedelic drug ecstasy; he was interested only in its potential use in therapy and was unhappy to see its abuse as a recreational drug. Died Monday at his home in California.

Jean Norris, 96: Creator of Twin Vision books, one side Braille and the other printed, which allowed blind parents to read to their children; thousands are now available free. Died April 30 at her home in Reseda, Calif.
