Deaths of note from around the world:
Margaret Groening: Mother of “The Simpsons” creator and Oregon native Matt Groening, who was in her 90s. Died April 22 in Portland; no cause of death was given.
Ray Harryhausen, 92: Special effects master whose sword-fighting skeletons, six-tentacled octopi and other fantastical creations in movies from “The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms” to “Valley of the Gwangi” were admired by industry heavyweights. Died Tuesday in a London hospital, of unknown causes.
Christian de Duve, 95: Belgian biochemist whose discoveries about the internal workings of cells shed light on genetic disorders like Tay-Sachs disease and helped give birth to the field of modern cell biology, earning him a Nobel Prize. Died Saturday at home in Nethen, Belgium; he was euthanized, which is legal in Belgium, after living with a number of health problems.
Frederic Franklin, 98: British-born New York ballet dancer known for his stylistic versatility — as Prince in “Swan Lake,” a cowboy in “Rodeo” and Stanley Kowalski in a choreographic version of “A Streetcar Named Desire” — and his inexhaustible energy — he performed well into his 90s. Died Saturday in Manhattan; cause of death was not reported.
