Schwab’s backstage hosts reggae bands

The new Backstage at Les Schwab Amphitheater concert series wraps up Saturday night with Reggae by the River, a sort of mini-festival featuring, uh, reggae bands by the, uh … river.

If you haven’t made it to one of these Backstage shows, you really should. Bands set up on the deck of the white house to the northwest of the amphitheater’s stage, and the audience gathers between the band and the Deschutes River. There are drinks and food for sale, a festive atmosphere and — at least last weekend when Y La Bamba played — mosquitoes feasting on human flesh. Wear repellent!

Anyway, Saturday’s Backstage show features Mad Caddies, a fine, veteran band from Santa Barbara, Calif., that deftly mixes reggae, punk rock and pop melodies, as well as Indubious, a reggae/dancehall power trio from Ashland. Local ska group Necktie Killer will open the evening.

Reggae by the River, with Mad Caddies, Indubious and Necktie Killer; 6:30 p.m. Saturday, gates open 5 p.m.; $8.50 in advance at The Ticket Mill (541-318-5457) and the website below, $10 at the gate; Backstage at Les Schwab Amphitheater, 344 S.W. Shevlin Hixon Drive, Bend; www.bendconcerts.com.
