Backporch Coffee Roasters

This is a cafe for the serious coffee drinker. A decade ago, when his University of Oregon classmates were busy making beer, proprietor David Beach already was roasting his own coffee. Today, more than three years after purchasing a former DiLusso shop opposite the Newport Avenue Market, Beach admits: “We are nearing the genre of boutique roasters.”

Roasting and grinding equipment is prominently displayed behind the service counter. Bags of beans, empty and full, rest in a corner of the caf e floor. Thirteen whole-bean coffees, most of them from Latin America, are sold at $12 to $20 per pound. A dozen loose-leaf teas are also available. Although a small number of pastries (from the Sparrow Bakery) are offered in a display case, the food takes a back seat to the brews.

Busy even mid-afternoon on a weekday, Backporch has 10 tables, a couch and easy chairs. Eclectic local art hangs on the walls. Beach and his wife, Majell, own the shop with partners Jeremy and Erica Williamson.
