Widgi Creek Golf Course

This is the latest installment of a weekly Tee To Green feature in which we check in via email with Central Oregon golf facilities for an offseason update. This week we contacted Brad Hudspeth, general manager at Widgi Creek Golf Club in Bend.
Hudspeth has been involved in the day-to-day operations at Widgi Creek since 2005. This is what he had to say about the current business of golf and his public course in southwest Bend:
Q: How was business in 2013?
A: Business in 2013 was good at Widgi Creek. We saw an increase in rounds played of over 3 percent from 2012. And most importantly, thanks to superintendent Paul Rozek and his experienced staff, the golf course was in outstanding shape throughout the entire season.
Q: Were any changes of note made to the facility during the past year?
A: In 2013, our major changes included the rebuilding of three tee boxes on the course, the addition of a brand new fleet of golf carts, and we also brought in some new maintenance equipment as well.
Q: Are any changes and/or improvements to the facility scheduled for 2014?
A: In 2014, we will be bringing in new mowing equipment for the maintenance department, rebuilding some more tee boxes and changing our five-day membership to include all-day Sunday through all-day Thursday. (In the past, five-day passes began at noon on Sundays.)
Q: After a recession that began in 2007, how have your golf operations changed in recent years?
A: Since 2007, we have downsized our staff in both the food and beverage operation and the pro shop operation (maintenance staff has remained intact). We have also been more competitive in pricing with our daily fees and memberships.
Q: Are the local golf facilities doing enough to attract and foster local play? If not, what more can be done?
A: I believe that golf in Central Oregon will continue on the upswing. And with the continued efforts from all of us, in conjunction with the Central Oregon Golf Trail, we will remain a prominent location for players in and around the state of Oregon.
