Panthers pull away for nonconference win

PRAIRIE CITY — Redmond High grabbed a six-point lead in the first quarter on Saturday afternoon, and Cody Moss’ strong third quarter allowed the Class 5A Panthers to claim a 57-47 nonconference boys basketball win over 4A Baker at Prairie City High School.
“We kind of got out to an early lead,” Redmond coach Jon Corbett said. “And it just stayed there.”
Moss hit five 3-pointers on the day, three of which came in the third quarter that allowed the Panthers to extend their lead to 45-33 heading into the final period.
Moss finished with a game-high 17 points, and Michael Belmontes added 14 points. Derek Brown finished with eight points and six rebounds for Redmond, which improved to 2-13 on the season.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Gilchrist 69, North Lake 51: SILVER LAKE — Trinton Koch poured in 30 points, and the Grizzlies outscored the Cowboys 16-6 in the third quarter to take the Class 1A Mountain Valley League matchup. Hunter Nelson had 13 points for the Grizzlies (6-2 MVL, 13-6 overall), and James Wible totaled 11 points. Daniel Libolt was 6 of 9 shooting for 17 points to lead North Lake (4-5, 6-11) while adding seven rebounds, three steals and two assists. Cameron McCord chipped in with 15 points for the Cowboys.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Redmond 39, Baker 32: PRAIRIE CITY — Sophia Hamilton posted 10 points, and the Panthers jumped out to a 14-4 lead after the first quarter en route to their first win of the season. Chantel Dannis chipped in with eight points, 18 rebounds, three steals and a block for Redmond (1-15), which played at Prairie City High School, and Maddie Edwards contributed five points, three steals and two assists.
North Lake 58, Gilchrist 25: SILVER LAKE — The Grizzlies fell to 0-8 in Class 1A Mountain Valley League play and 3-15 overall after failing to score in the opening quarter of their game against the Cowgirls. Cassandra Blum led Gilchrist with nine points. North Lake’s Jade Stockton led all scorers with 19 points, 12 of which came off 3-pointers. Kendra Murphy added 15 points and 17 rebounds for the Cowgirls (6-2, 12-5).
Trinity Lutheran 45, Paisley 36: PAISLEY — The Saints went on an 11-1 run to open the second half and build a 29-17 lead on their way to a Class 1A Mountain Valley League victory. Katie Murphy scored 17 points to pace Trinity Lutheran (7-2 MVL, 12-7 overall), 15 of which came in the second half, when the Saints outscored the Broncos 27-20. Murphy also pulled down 10 rebounds. Emily Eidler scored seven of her nine points after the intermission and totaled seven boards.
WRESTLING
La Pine takes top honors at Frostbite: LA PINE — Thorin Wilson’s first-place finish at 120 pounds and five second-place wrestlers helped the Hawks edge runner-up Madras by eight points at their own Frostbite Invitational. Madras boasted four first-place finishers, including Ian Oppenlander at 106 pounds, Bryce Vincent at 113, Jarred Dupont at 126 and Michael Bauman at 182. Sisters finished in seventh as a team thanks in part to Mark Fish’s second-place showing at 152 pounds and Dyut Fetrow’s third-place finish at 126.
Cougs third at Putnam tourney: MILWAUKIE — Competing in its last tournament before regionals, Mountain View placed third overall at the Joe Stewart Invitational at Rex Putnam High School behind the strength of seven Cougar finalists. Conner Duhn (106 pounds), Zack Howe (113), Jimmy Radaford (145) and Tracy Pitcher (152) all won tournament titles while Haden Kingrey (126), Chase Misener (132) and Kevin Wright (160) placed second. Roosevelt High out of Portland won the event with 156 points. Gladstone was second with 150 1⁄2 points and Mountain View finished third with 148 1⁄2.
Redmond second, Ridgeview fifth at South Albany: ALBANY — Redmond’s two high schools finished second and fifth at South Albany High School’s Mid-Valley Classic. North Marion topped the 10-team field with 197 points, Redmond High was second with 167 points and Tualatin took third with 166 points. South Albany (161 points) and Ridgeview (151) rounded out the top five. Freshman Bunker Parrish at 170 pounds — he defeated Ridgeview’s Austin Hill 12-3 in the final — and junior Brennan Yates at 182 won titles for the Panthers. Mitch Willett, another Redmond High freshman, took second at 182 pounds. Connor Sperling led the Ravens with a tournament championship at 220 pounds. Boomer Fleming added a second-place finish for Ridgeview, losing by default in his 195-pound final.
NORDIC SKIING
Cougar boys and girls clean up: MOUNT BACHELOR — The Mountain View girls beat South Eugene by 15 points to take first place at the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association classic race. Tia Hatton led the Cougars with a second-place finish on the 4.8-kilometer course, while five others placed in the top 10. Phacelia Cramer of South Eugene was the overall winner. Molly Miller, representing Redmond Proficiency Academy, placed 40th, and Justise Bishop took 43rd to lead Crook County. The Cougar boys also took first, defeating runner-up South Eugene by 21 points. Sam King led Mountain View by taking second and Imran Wolfenden came in third. Alex Martin of Summit, which took fifth as a team, was first overall. Leonhard Pusl was 27th to pace Crook County, which took sixth as a team with 102 points.
