SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Sisters High bounced back from a loss during the first day of the Salt River Classic baseball tournament Thursday and won two games Friday to end pool play with a 2-1 record.

The Outlaws started the day with a 4-2 victory over Valley Union (Ariz.) as freshman starter Ryan Funk struck out nine and walked none in five innings of work. Justin Harrer earned a six-out save, pitching the sixth and seventh innings.

“Funk was outstanding,” Sisters coach Steve Hodges said about his freshman standout during his first varsity start. “He’s throwing all three of his pitches for strikes.”

Senior catcher Joey Morgan led the Outlaws (3-1 overall) in their early game with a triple and two RBIs.

Later in the day Sisters cruised to a 17-0 win against Phoenix Christian (Ariz.). Senior pitcher Austin Olgivie earned the win, throwing two innings of shutout ball before freshman Jacob Burney finished the game.

Cody Kreminski had a monster game at the plate for the Outlaws, going 2 for 3 with a grand slam and five RBIs. Morgan was 3 for 3 with four RBIs and a two-run homer.

Sisters continues the tournament today with bracket play.

BASEBALL

Yamhill-Carlton 9, La Pine 4: MADRAS — The Hawks dropped to 1-6 on the season after falling to the Tigers at the White Buffalo Spring Classic. Tristan Cox struck out eight in 3 2/3 innings pitched for La Pine, while Casey Schneider fanned five in 2 1/3 innings. Keagen Morton doubled for the Hawks, and Josh Simmons drove in a run.

Pleasant Hill 2, Madras 1: MADRAS — Alec McDonald pitched an “absolute gem” for the White Buffaloes, but Pleasant Hill scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn the White Buffalo Spring Classic victory. McDonald gave up just five hits while striking out one and walking none. He hit one batter. Madras took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning but failed to score the rest of the game.

Games postponed due to rain: Bend High and Summit each had two games cancelled on Friday because of rain. The Lava Bears’ home doubleheader against West Albany has been rescheduled for next Saturday at 1 p.m., while Summit’s contests against Willamette and Cleveland will be played this morning at the Volcanoes Spring Tournament in Keizer.

Brown leads at heptathlon: SWEET HOME — Summit junior Miranda Brown placed first in the high jump and the 200-meter run to earn a first-place standing at the end of the first day of the Sweet Home Decathlon/Heptathlon. Brown’s total of 2,219 points through four of the heptathlon’s seven events leads Sisters’ Michaela Miller, who has 2,089 points. In fifth is Summit freshman Megan Cornett, who placed third in the shot put on her way to 1,925 points. In the decathlon standings, Storm frosh Kyle Cornett is fifth with 2,388 points after taking fourth in the 100 and tied for fifth in the high jump. Thurston’s Grant Shurtliff leads through five events with 3,137 points. The decathlon and heptathlon wrap up today at Sweet Home High School.
