Cougars split at softball tourney in The Dalles

THE DALLES — A hot start helped Mountain View defeat Century 11-8 in the Cougars’ first of two games at The Dalles Spring Break Softball Tournament on Monday.

Mountain View scored four runs in the first inning, and three each in the second and third innings to take a 10-4 lead.

Hannah Wicklund was the winning pitcher and also went 2 for 4 at the plate with a triple and a run batted in. Carriann Elms was 2 for 2 with a triple for the Cougars, and Jamie Withrow was 3 for 4 with three singles.

Mountain View lost its second game of the day to Gresham, 12-0, in five innings.

The Cougars (1-2 overall) face The Dalles/Dufur today at 9 a.m. and Molalla at 11:30 a.m.

SOFTBALL

Summit splits in Canby: CANBY — A 10-run first inning helped the Storm secure a 14-2 victory over McKay in four innings, but Summit allowed an 11-run inning in its second game as it fell 19-2 to Hillsboro at the Canby Tournament. The Storm’s Brooke Frey pitched all four innings against McKay, allowing just one run on two hits. All 11 Summit players who saw action scored a run. Against Hillsboro, Jacqueline Manley had an RBI double, and Brooke Lee logged a run-scoring single. The Storm (2-3) continue action today with games against Sherwood and Parkrose.

Culver drops two at Irrigon tourney: IRRIGON — The Bulldogs fell to 0-4 on the season after losing 10-0 to Gaston in six innings and 14-4 to Union/Cove in five innings on the first day of the Irrigon Spring Tournament. Culver struck out 17 times in the first game and finished with just three hits. The bats woke up against Union/Cove, however, as Shealene Little and Myra Lopez each went 2 for 3 for the Bulldogs. But Union/Cove put up eight runs with two outs in the bottom of the third inning en route to the 10-run victory. Culver resumes tournament play today at 10 a.m. against Irrigon.

BASEBALL

Panthers sweep on first day: HERMISTON — Redmond won both its games at the Pendleton/Hermiston Spring Break Tournament, beginning with a 9-0 shutout of Milwaukee and capped by a 12-9 win over Sunset. Redmond (3-1) will play Reynolds today in the championship bracket.

GIRLS GOLF

Sample second at Indian Creek: HOOD RIVER — Trinity Lutheran’s Victoria Sample fired a 40 on her final nine holes to help secure second place at the Horizon Christian Invitational at Indian Creek Golf Course. Sample’s 88 was only bested by the even-par 72 carded by Bree Wanderscheid of Goldendale, a two-time Class 1A individual state champion in Washington who has committed to play golf at Washington State. Mariah Murphy had a 140 for the Saints, while Savannah Rose Walker finished with a 148.
