‘NEED FOR SPEED’

Rating: PG-13 for sequences of reckless street racing, disturbing crash scenes, nudity and crude language.

What it’s about: A veteran of the illegal street racing scene gets out of prison seeking riches, revenge and justice … in another illegal street race.

The kid attractor factor: Based on the video game, with hot cars hurtling off the 3-D screen at very high speeds.

Good lessons / bad lessons: “Racers should race; cops should get doughnuts.”

Violence: Street racing crashes, shootings, fisticuffs.

Language: Scattered profanity.

Sex: A nude scene played for a joke.

Drugs: Medicinal only.

Parents’ advisory: A movie that screams “Don’t try this at home,” but otherwise inoffensive and OK for 8-and-up.

‘VERONICA MARS’

Rating: PG-13 for sexuality including references, drug content, violence and some strong language.

What it’s about: The former teen detective is now a lawyer and pushing 30. But “old habits die hard” when one former high school classmate is murdered and another is accused of the crime.

The kid attractor factor: Kristen Bell, in the TV role that made her famous long before she sang in “Frozen.”

Good lessons / bad lessons: Some people never outgrow their high school persona. And that’s not a good thing.

Violence: Yes, a shooting and a bar fight.

Language: Profanity, because they’re not on network TV any more.

Sex: Secret “sex tapes” are discussed; adults have the occasional overnight guest.

Drugs: Alcohol is consumed.

Parents’ advisory: It’s the TV show with profanity and “sex tape” touches and more explicit violence. Kids too young for the show might be confused, but this movie is suitable for 13-and-up.
