La Pine softball breaks two-year Sky-Em skid with win

LA PINE — It took nine innings, but La Pine got its first softball league win in two years on Tuesday.

With the score knotted up 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth, La Pine freshman Bailey McGirt came off the bench and belted a line drive to left field, bringing in Maddie Fisher from second and sending the Hawks to a 7-6 victory over Sisters.

Keara Parrish pitched eight innings for La Pine (1-13 Sky-Em, 7-17 overall) and helped herself out with a double and a triple. Brenna Carpenter came on in relief in the ninth to secure the win. Micaela Miller was 3 for 4 with an RBI.

The Outlaws (1-13, 1-21) were led by Shayla Curtis, who was 3 for 5 with an RBI. Zoey Nason had two hits and three RBIs, and Kylie Steiner had two hits.

SOFTBALL

Gladstone 3, Madras 1: GLADSTONE — The White Buffaloes evened the score at 1-1 with a run in the fourth, but Gladstone scored twice in the bottom of the inning en route to the Tri-Valley Conference victory. Jasmyn Reese had a bunt single for Madras (6-7, 10-13) and scored on a Shelby Mauritson triple. Chloe Martin and Reese combined to limit the one-loss and league-leading Gladiators to just two hits.

Central Linn 8, Culver 0: HALSEY — The Bulldogs managed just two base runners and zero hits against the Cobras in a Class 2A/1A Special District 3 contest. Josie Harrison pitched 3 2/3 inning of no-hit ball for Culver (4-7, 4-16) after coming in to pitch in the third.

BASEBALL

Sisters 12, La Pine 3: SISTERS — A 10-run first allowed the Outlaws to seize control early and cruise to a Sky-Em League victory. Jardon Weems went 2 for 2 with three RBIs for Sisters (14-0, 20-2), Ryan Funk went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs, and Joey Morgan doubled and drove in two run. For La Pine (1-13, 2-22), Tristan Cox smacked a two-run double to highlight a three-run second inning.

BOYS TENNIS

Outlaws send three to state: MEDFORD — Sisters’ Paul Fullhart fell in the championships to North Bend’s Keaton Baker in the Special District 3 district singles championships and the tandem of Devon Calvin and Evan Rickards placed fourth in the doubles bracket to give Sisters three qualifiers for the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state tournament next week. The three-day championships at Oregon State begin next Thursday.

GIRLS TENNIS

Harris takes district title: ONTARIO — Elsa Harris defeated two Ridgeview players en route to the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 5 title, the third straight district singles championship for the Crook County junior. Harris put away the Ravens’ Caitlin Carr 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals before dispatching Ridgeview’s Riley Hanks 6-4, 6-3 in the final. Crook County’s doubles team of Laura Fraser and Gwyneth Ptomey fell in the semifinals 6-2, 6-0 but rebounded in the third-place match with a 7-5, 6-3 win over a Vale tandem. The state championships begin on Thursday at Oregon State.

BOYS GOLF

La Pine qualifies golfer to state: BLUE RIVER — After carding an 89 on the second day of the Sky-Em League championships at Tokatee Golf Club, La Pine’s Isiah Dolan finished with a two-day total of 171 to take fifth overall and clinch a spot at the Class 4A state championships at Eagle Crest on Monday. The Hawks finished fourth with a 786, followed by Sisters with 877. Nolan Ferwalt paced the Outlaws with an 87 on the second day of competition to finish with a 181 overall. Cottage Grove won with a 703, while Junction City’s Johnny Hunts claimed medalist honors with a 158.

Ravens claim district crown: REDMOND — James Seeley’s two-day total of 158 was good enough for third place and helped Ridgeview win the Greater Oregon League championships at Eagle Crest’s Ridge Course. The Ravens finished with a team score of 665. Brandon Ellwanger of Baker won medalist honors with a 149.

GIRLS GOLF

Cowgirls win district: BLUE RIVER — After finishing one shot behind Ridgeview after the first day of the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 5 championships at Tokatee Golf Club, Crook County rebounded and took the team title by 12 shots, finishing with a two-day total of 792. Maddie Kasberger led Crook County with a 192. Tianna Brown claimed medalist honors with a 181 for Ridgeview, which took second with an 804, and Raelyn Lambert was third with a 188. Ridgeview and Crook County qualified for the state tournament at Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis next week, which begins Monday. Trinity Lutheran’s Victoria Sample and Sisters’ Codie Lagao will also move on to state after shooting a 183 and a 191, respectively.
