The Oregon Natural Desert Association is starting the “Seven Wonders of Sutton Mountain” campaign, highlighting recreation opportunities in the area near Mitchell.
Sutton Mountain is located near the Painted Hills of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.
ONDA will begin sharing information over the course of seven weeks about Sutton Mountain’s seven wonders and how to access them. Those wanting to access all the information at once can visit ONDA’s website, www.ONDA.org/SevenWonders.
ONDA calls the Sutton Mountain Wilderness Proposal area “a secret Oregon gem equal in allure and beauty” to the Painted Hills.
The Sutton Mountain area encompasses a 4,694-foot mountain with vistas, canyons carved by burbling creeks, otherworldly geological features and frontage above the John Day River. It offers hiking, boating and birding opportunities. In all, the area contains multiple wilderness study areas for a total of more than 58,000 acres.
