A crisis response team will be available today to students at Lynch Elementary in Redmond following the death of 7-year-old Phoenix Marie Price on Friday.
Price died when her stepfather crashed his SUV traveling north on U.S. Highway 97 about 5 miles north of Bend shortly before 7:30 p.m. Four other girls were injured in the crash.
Kelly Richard, Redmond School District’s communications coordinator, said the Tri-County Crisis Response Team will be available to students and staff. The team, run by the High Desert Education Service District, is trained to respond to tragedies such as the death of a student.
Richard added the district will send parents information on how to support children processing grief. Additionally, the district will reach out to the families of those involved to provide added assistance.
According to Oregon State Police, driver William Wayne Fix, 32, was treated at St. Charles Bend, then booked into the Deschutes County jail on charges of first-degree manslaughter, three counts of second-degree assault, driving under the influence of intoxicants — alcohol, reckless driving and five counts of recklessly endangering another person.
Two Redmond girls, 14-year-old Naomi Spansel and 10-year-old Olivia Jeanes, were critically injured in the crash. Both were taken to St. Charles Bend and later transferred to hospitals in Portland. Spansel remains in critical condition at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center’s Randall Children’s Hospital and Jeanes is in critical condition at Oregon Health & Sciences University Hospital, according to hospital spokesmen.
Valon Fix, 14, also of Redmond, was taken to St. Charles Redmond with serious injuries, while Izzabella Robbins, 7, of Redmond, was taken to St. Charles Redmond for minor injuries. Fix and Robbins have been released, a hospital spokesman said Sunday.
William Wayne Fix is being held at the Deschutes County jail on $122,500 bail, and is due to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. today. An investigation into the crash is continuing.
Fix was driving a 1997 white Chevrolet Suburban, which left the road, struck a rock embankment and rolled over. State police are seeking any witnesses to the crash on the highway at milepost 128. They should call OSP at 800-452-7888.
