The Mad Caddies have never been afraid to dilute — or maybe the word is augment — their punk/ska/reggae foundation with whatever out-there influences are floating by.

The band, which formed among California high school buddies, has been chugging along for nearly 20 years, growing a loyal fan base by churning out good-times tunes that tend to travel along that timeworn punk-meets-reggae groove.

But on their new album “Dirty Rice,” the Caddies stray further afield than ever before. The first single, “Brand New Scar,” bears no trace of punk or reggae. Instead, it’s an immediately catchy, midtempo pop-rock song with a heavy Dixieland jazz vibe. There’s something sort of Mumford & Sons-ish about it, except if that band aped the sound of New Orleans rather than Appalachia. “Down and Out” is more of the same, just insert, like, Billy Joel for Mumford.

Of course, on songs like “Love Myself” (a relative punk rager), “Shoot Out the Lights” (an offbeat, organ-fueled reggae tune) and “Dangerous” (a very Caddies-ish combo of the two styles), the band gets back to its roots. The tie that binds it all together? A natural talent for ear-tickling melodies and a commitment to showcasing those melodies no matter the musical style. And that, ultimately, is what makes the Mad Caddies a great band.
