Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office deputies needed additional officers, a SWAT team, negotiators and finally two attack dogs to capture a transient who had allegedly shot at a young girl near China Hat Road on Friday afternoon.

Nathaniel G. Bennett, 34, of Bend, faces charges that include unlawful use of a weapon, coercion, menacing, attempted assault and reckless endangering, according to a press release from Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Chris Barringer.

Deputies were dispatched about 3 p.m. Friday to China Hat Road near Forest Service Road 1810.

Members of a tour group told them Bennett confronted the group as they rode utility terrain vehicles near his camp, Barringer said.

“Deputies learned Bennett pointed a firearm at the group, and discharged the firearm in close proximity to a juvenile female,” Barringer said.

Bennett had a nearby van where deputies feared he had other weapons, Barringer said.

When deputies were unable to safely communicate with Bennett, negotiators talked to him from an armored vehicle. Two dogs, Ronin and Delta, were sent after Bennett when he attempted to get to his van, bringing him down, Barringer said.

Bennett was taken to St. Charles Bend for a medical evaluation consistent with dog bites and is now being held in the Deschutes County jail, Barringer said.
