Gillian Bellamy Friend

Nov. 25, 1985 – Nov. 15, 2002

Gillian Bellamy Friend of Terrebonne died Friday in an automobile accident near Estacada. He was 16.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Assembly of God Church in Redmond. Chaplain Vern Arledge will officiate.

Gillian was born Nov. 25, 1985, in Oregon City.

He was a student at Redmond High School.

Gillian enjoyed backpacking, boating, going to the ocean and driving on the dunes.

He liked to skateboard, drive four wheelers, ski and snowboard. His hobbies included macrame and hand sewing.

Gillian moved to Central Oregon seven years ago.

Survivors include his father, Chester Friend of Colton; his mother, Pamela Friend of Terrebonne; one brother, C.W. III of Portland; one sister, Cheyenne of Terrebonne; grandfather, Floyd Ringering of Pendleton; and grandmother, Mary Lou Long of Sandy.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Redmond Skate Park.

Stuart Alan Variz

Oct. 14, 1985 – Nov. 15, 2002

Stuart Alan Variz of Redmond died Friday in an automobile accident near Estacada. He was 17.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Assembly of God Church in Redmond with Chaplain Vern Arledge officiating.

Stuart was born Oct. 14, 1985, in Anchorage, Alaska.

He was a student at Redmond High School.

Stuart enjoyed skateboarding. He sang back-up vocals in a local band.

He moved Central Oregon when he was 10 months old.

Survivors include his mother, Sharon Variz of Redmond; two brothers, Michael of 29 Palms, Calif., and Steven of Redmond; one sister, Melissa of Redmond; grandfather, Charles Raine of Redmond; stepgrandfather and grandmother, Ron and Bunny Hulbert of Redmond; and great-grandmother, Freda Kerns of Redmond.

He was preceded in death by his father, Manuel Variz.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Redmond Skate Park.

Keith L. French Sr.

May 1, 1917 – Nov. 14, 2002

Keith L. French Sr. of Lebanon died Thursday of natural causes. He was 85.

No service will be held.

Mr. French was born May 1, 1917, in Baraboo, Wis. He married Gloria Cook on April 10, 1954, in Deep Water, Mo.

He served in the military during World War II.

Mr. French was a truck driver.

He moved to Bend in 1982.

Survivors include his two sons, Randy of Bend and Larry of La Pine; and three sisters, Bernita Janke of Washington, Allita of Comstock, Texas and Corita Underwood of California.

He was preceded in death by his wife, a son, seven brothers and a sister.

Burl Leroy Cox

Feb. 18, 1919 – Nov. 18, 2002

Burl Leroy Cox of Bend died Monday. He was 83.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bend.

Mr. Cox was born Feb. 18, 1919, in Shannon Mill. He graduated from Salem High School in 1936. He married Cleo Bales on Sept. 12, 1940, in Vancouver, Wash.

He served in the Army during World War II in the South Pacific. He was awarded a Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He retired in 1973 after 37 years of service with the Oregon National Guard.

Mr. Cox worked for Jenks-White Seed Company.

He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, boating, camping and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of Bend; one son, Raymond of Salem; one daughter, Karen Bennett of Bend; two sisters, Edna Thorton and Viola Morelock; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Central Oregon Hospice, 2698 NE Courtney Drive, Bend 97701.

Alga Emily

(Stone) Loy

July 31, 1928 – Nov. 17, 2002

Alga Emily (Stone) Loy of Bend died Sunday. She was 74.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Christian Life Center in Bend.

Mrs. Loy was born July 31, 1928, in Ada, Okla. She graduated from Sparks Medical School of Nursing, Fort Smith, Ark., in 1950. She married Web Loy on May 8, 1954, in San Leandro, Calif.

She was a registered nurse. Mrs. Loy worked at the old St. Charles Hospital in downtown Bend. She also worked at Central Oregon Health Care Center for 19 years.

Mrs. Loy was affiliated with Bend Bible Fellowship.

She enjoyed her family, reading and baking.

Survivors include her husband of Bend; two sons, Rex of Springfield and Eric of Spokane, Wash.; three daughters, Regina Gillogley of Bend, Eunice Loy of Anchorage, Alaska, and Tina Miller of Grants Pass; two brothers, Olga Stone of Lubbock, Texas, and David Stone of Wichita, Kan.; four sisters, Nida Middleton of Lawton, Okla., Lureen DeWitt of Mead, Okla., Martha White of Plainview, Texas, and Wanda Metcalf of Ada, Okla.; and 12 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

Paul E. White

July 12, 1919 – Nov. 13, 2002

Paul E. White of Bend died Nov. 13 of natural causes. He was 83.

No service will be held per his request.

Mr. White was born July 12, 1919, in Hartshorne, Okla. He married Laura Clark in 1942, in Vancouver, Wash.

He served in the Air Force for 26 years as a warrant officer. He was a Veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He retired in 1967.

Mr. White was affiliated with the Mason AF and AM Lodge in Texas and the Redmond Elks.

He enjoyed his family, horses and trail riding. He liked to fish, hunt and play golf.

Survivors include his wife of Bend; two daughters, Patricia White of Sisters and Sharon Dilley of Bend; two sisters, Marian and Maryann both of Oklahoma; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and five sisters.

Memorial contributions may be made to Central Oregon Hospice or a Hospice of one’s choice.
