Don’t censor cartoons

Leanne K. Latterell (May 30) wrote to say that she once again opened The Bulletin and encountered a political cartoon that did not meet her needs for “fairness, openness and respect.” According to her, she gets to define these qualities not only for her, but everyone else. She also seems to expect to be able to go through life never being offended by anything she reads in the paper.
The Bulletin does model respect, dignity and honor by allowing free speech in the form of publishing political cartoons of all sorts. Political cartoonists will take shots at anybody for the humor found in it. We as individuals have a right and a responsibility to sort through what we read according to our own beliefs and sense of humor. If any particular person doesn’t find a cartoon funny, so what? Live your life according to your beliefs and hope your compassion, gratitude and acceptance shines through. Oh, and be prepared to encounter things that don’t meet your needs — that’s called life.
