Beavers shut out Bears — Andrew Moore held California to two hits in a complete-game shutout of the Golden Bears in Oregon State’s 5-0 win Saturday afternoon in front of 3,053 fans at Goss Stadium in Corvallis.Moore needed just 87 pitches to throw his first career complete game, and improved to 9-1 on the year in the process. His effort propelled the Beavers (36-8, 16-4 Pac-12) to the series victory over the Golden Bears, and Oregon State will go for the sweep today at 12:05 p.m.

Ducks clinch series with Cougars — Ryon Healy hit his 10th home run of the season and pitcher Cole Irvin battled through some early troubles to lead Oregon to a 6-3 Pac-12 Conference victory at Washington State on Saturday. Healy went 2-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored to lead Oregon (36-11, 18-5 Pac-12) to a series-clinching win. J.J. Altobelli was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Irvin (9-2) allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits in seven innings. Oregon will look for the series sweep today against Washington State (20-22, 7-13 Pac-12). First pitch is set for noon.

Motor sports

NASCAR qualifying washed out — Rain washed out qualifying for today’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Ala. The field was set based on practice times from Friday’s first session, and Carl Edwards was fastest to earn the pole in his Roush Fenway Racing Ford. Martin Truex Jr. will start second, followed by Marcos Ambrose and Joey Logano.

Smith wins Nationwide race — Regan Smith won the crash-filled Nationwide Series race at Talladega Superspeedway when NASCAR said he was leading at the final caution flag Saturday night in Talladega, Ala. At least 10 cars were jockeying for position in packs of two on the final lap when Brian Vickers was spun hard into the outside wall. Smith, Joey Logano and Kasey Kahne raced three-wide to the finish line and Kahne crossed it first. But NASCAR decided Smith was leading when the caution came out and was the winner.

Hunter-Reay wins Sao Paulo pole — American Ryan Hunter-Reay set a track record Saturday in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to win today’s pole position for IndyCar’s Sao Paulo 300. The defending IndyCar Series champion had a lap of 1 minute, 20.430 seconds at the Anhembi street track, 0.307 ahead of Venezuelan EJ Viso and 0.461 in front of Scotland’s Dario Franchitti.

Tennis

Pavlyuchenkova wins Portugal Open — Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova beat Spain’s Carla Suarez 7-5, 6-2 to win the Portugal Open on Saturday in Oeiras, Portugal. In the men’s event, top-seeded David Ferrer beat Andreas Seppi 6-1, 6-4. He will play second-seeded Stan Wawrinka in today’s final after the Swiss player defeated Pablo Carreno-Busta 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

BMW Open final set — Tommy Haas will play defending champion Philipp Kohlschreiber in an all-German final at the BMW Open today in Munich. The third-seeded Haas defeated Ivan Dodig of Croatia 6-4, 6-3 on Saturday, while Kohlschreiber edged compatriot Daniel Brands 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-6 (5) to set up the first all-German title match in Munich in 48 years.

Cycling

Cavendish wins opening Giro stage — British standout Mark Cavendish won the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia on Saturday in Naples, Italy, in a sprint marred by a crash shortly before the finish. The main pack was split into two groups when riders went down with just more than a mile to go in the 81-mile leg. Cavendish rides for the Omega Pharma-Quick Step team and completed the circuit in downtown Naples in 2 hours, 58 minutes, 38 seconds. Elia Viviani, an Italian with Cannondale, was second. Nacer Bouhanni, a Frenchman with FDJ, was third.

Boxing

Klitschko defends belts — Wladimir Klitschko stopped Francesco Pianeta in the sixth round Saturday night to retain the WBA and IBF heavyweight titles in Mannheim, Germany. The Ukrainian was never troubled by Pianeta, finishing off the previously unbeaten Italian southpaw with a right-left combination.
