Timbers draw — Cole Grossman scored in stoppage time and Real Salt Lake played to a 3-3 draw against the host Portland Timbers to remain in first place in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference. Grossman’s goal in the 93rd minute came after Kalif Alhassan scored in the 86th minute for Portland. With the tie, the Timbers pulled even with the Colorado Rapids for second place in the conference standings. The Timbers went ahead in the 24th minute on Rodney Wallace’s header off a free kick from Diego Valeri. After falling behind 2-1, Portland evened the score on Valeri’s penalty kick in the 57th minute after Javier Morales was yellow-carded.
Basketball
Paul to head players union — Los Angeles Clippers star Chris Paul was elected president of the NBA players’ association Wednesday, replacing Derek Fisher. The vote by NBA player representatives came six months after the union fired Billy Hunter as executive director, a position that remains vacant. Paul was a vice president on the executive committee for the past four years.
Tennis
Sharapova withdraws — Maria Sharapova pulled out of the U.S. Open on Wednesday because of a right shoulder injury. The U.S. Tennis Association announced the 2006 champion’s withdrawal. Sharapova has played only one match on tour since her second-round loss at Wimbledon in June. Sharapova originally was seeded third at the U.S. Open. The draw for the year’s last Grand Slam tournament is today.
Football
Houston RB Foster back on field — Houston running back Arian Foster has been removed from the physically unable to perform list and has practiced with the Texans for the first time since May. Foster strained his right calf in an offseason practice in late May and struggled with a sore back after recovering from that injury.
Texans DE suspended — Houston Texans defensive end Antonio Smith lost his cool in a preseason game, and it’s going to keep him out of the team’s season opener. Smith was suspended by the NFL on Wednesday for Week 1 of the regular season and the last two preseason games for hitting Miami guard Richie Incognito with the Dolphins player’s helmet. Smith ripped the helmet off Incognito’s head, then hit Incognito on the shoulder with it Saturday night in the teams’ preseason game.
Steelers RB Bell out — The Pittsburgh Steelers’ crowded backfield is sorting itself out. Just not the way coach Mike Tomlin envisioned. What started as a three-man race between Isaac Redman, Jonathan Dwyer and rookie Le’Veon Bell is turning into a battle of attrition after Tomlin ruled Bell out of Saturday’s game against Kansas City with a right foot injury. Bell underwent an MRI on Tuesday and Tomlin said he will wait for a second opinion before making a determination about Bell’s long-term status.
