A rescuer aboard a helicopter found a Bend man Monday morning after the 21-year-old, who was skiing at Mt. Bachelor, went missing Sunday.

Ryan Melrose DeYoung, 21, was in found in good health despite a night outside, said Lt. Scott Shelton of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.

“He had been exposed for a long time,” he said.

DeYoung was still at the hospital Monday night and was listed in good condition, a St. Charles nursing supervisor said.

Searchers found DeYoung past Mt. Bachelor’s east catchline, the ski area’s boundary, about 1.5 miles from the Sunrise Lodge.

Temperatures in the area where DeYoung was found were around freezing over night, said George Perry, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Pendleton. The overnight low for a weather station northeast of Mount Bachelor was 28 degrees.

DeYoung was reported missing by the Mt. Bachelor Ski Patrol just before 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. Season pass holders, DeYoung and his father, Bruce DeYoung of Bend, set out for a day of skiing Sunday morning, Shelton said. They went up the Sunrise Express Lift and then took the lift to the summit of the 9,068-foot mountain.

The became separated on the way down and after Bruce DeYoung couldn’t find his son he contacted the Mt. Bachelor Ski Partol, Shelton said. Members of the Ski Patrol discovered tracks going past the ski area’s east catchline, tracks which they determined Ryan DeYoung likely made. Helicopters aided in the search Sunday and this morning, with a helicopter from Bend-based Leading Edge Aviation locating DeYoung.

A nearby search team on the ground located DeYoung and gave him dry clothes. An ATV carried DeYoung to the Sunrise Lodge and then a Sunriver Fire Department ambulance transported him this afternoon to St. Charles Bend. Read the full story in Tuesday’s Bulletin.
