Cowboys rally to beat White Buffs

PRINEVILLE — Down by nine points in the third quarter, Crook County rallied in the final period on its way to a 70-68 Tri-Valley Conference boys basketball win over Madras Friday night at a packed Crook County High School.

Blake Bartels led the Cowboys (4-2 TVC, 10-10 overall) with 24 points, and Seth Kessi added 22 points, seven rebounds and six steals.

Crook County led by as much as 13 in the first quarter, but Madras came back behind the play of Jered Pichette to tie the game by halftime. Pichette had 21 of his game-high 33 points in the first half.

The White Buffaloes built their lead up to nine, but the Cowboys stormed back in the fourth quarter, making 7 of 10 free throws in the final period. They also held Pichette without a field goal in the fourth quarter.

“We made some timely stops and made free throws,” said Crook County coach Darin Kessi.

Shae Yeahquo added 11 points for Madras (5-1, 15-5), which suffered its first Tri-Valley Conference loss this season.

Ridgeview 82, Redmond 56: REDMOND — Carson Manselle and George Mendazona scored 21 points apiece as the Ravens rolled to the Intermountain Conference home win over the rival Panthers. Manselle scored 19 points in the first half as Ridgeview charged to a 44-18 lead by intermission. Manselle finished with 11 rebounds, and Mendazona, who hit five 3-pointers, had eight assists as the Ravens (4-4 IMC, 13-6 overall) ended a three-game slide. Cody Moss led Redmond (0-7 IMC, 3-16 overall) with 13 points, and Brandon Benson had 12.

Coquille 60, La Pine 55: LA PINE — Ian Johnson scored 21 points and Tyress Turnsplenty had 13 points, eight rebounds and five blocks, but the Hawks succumbed to the well-balanced attack of the Red Devils in the Mountain Valley Conference game. The game was tied 44-44 going into the fourth quarter, but Coquille outscored La Pine (4-7 MVC, 9-12 overall) 16-11 in the final quarter to claim the victory.

Sisters 48, Cottage Grove 38: SISTERS — The Outlaws built a lead slowly but surely, outscoring the Lions in each quarter on the way to a Sky-Em League win. Steen Johnson led Sisters (5-1 Sky-Em, 12-6 overall) with 13 points and three 3-pointers while teammates Connor Schaab and Tysen Gill pulled down six rebounds apiece.

Western-McEwen 49, Culver 30: CULVER — A scoreless second quarter doomed Culver’s bid for its first Columbia Basin Conference victory of the season. The Bulldogs were down 16-8 after one period, then missed all five of their shots in the second quarter and committed 12 turnovers in the period to fall behind 27-8 at halftime. Adam Knepp and Weston Basl led the Bulldogs (0-7 CBC, 2-18) with seven points apiece. Corey Sledge added six points for Culver.

North Lake 64, Gilchrist 53: GILCHRIST — Daniel Libolt made five 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 19 points, leading the Cowboys to the Mountain Valley League road victory. Libolt also had seven rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots. Ethan Murphy scored 16 points and Cameron McCord had 13 for North Lake (7-4 MVL, 10-9 overall). Gabe Bernabe and Jacob Blood scored 13 points apiece to lead Gilchrist (3-7, 7-13), which also got 10 points each from Justin Metzler and Hunter Nelson.

Girls basketball

Ridgeview 68, Redmond 33: REDMOND — The Ravens secured a home Intermountain Conference win to improve to 12-8 overall and 6-2 in league play, sliding Ridgeview into the top spot of the IMC standings. Redmond dropped to 0-7 in conference action and 2-16 overall.

Sisters 44, Cottage Grove 43: SISTERS — Cierra Mann scored on a feed from Boston Moore with two seconds left, lifting the Outlaws to a comeback Sky-Em League win. Three players for Sisters (3-3 Sky-Em, 8-11 overall) finished with double-doubles, including Mann, with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Haylie Hudson had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Olivia Stewart had 10 points and 17 boards.

La Pine 37, Coquille 25: LA PINE — Riley Mickel hit five 3-pointers on her way to a season-high 21 points, leading the Hawks to a Mountain Valley Conference win. Mickel made 5 of her 6 3-point attempts, sinking three in the third period as La Pine (6-5 MVC, 14-7 overall) extended its 19-14 halftime lead to 33-20. Also for the Hawks, Alexis Roes had eight points and seven steals, and McKenna Boen totaled 11 rebounds.

Trinity Lutheran 64, Triad 43: KLAMATH FALLS — Trinity Lutheran scored 16 points in each quarter, slowly building a sizable lead over Triad as the Saints rolled to a Mountain Valley League victory. Katie Murphy had a double-double for the Saints (10-1 MVL, 19-2 overall), recording 27 points and 10 rebounds. Emily Eidler added 20 points and eight boards.

Madras 37, Crook County 32: MADRAS — The White Buffaloes pulled ahead with a 15-point second quarter en route to the Tri-Valley Conference win. Leah Suppah led Madras (5-1 TVC, 12-8 overall) with 12 points. The Cowgirls (1-5, 5-14) were a force on the boards with Kimmer Severance totaling 18 rebounds and Chelsea Thomas posting 14.

Weston-McEwen 38, Culver 28: CULVER — The TigerScots outscored cold-shooting Culver 15-2 in the third quarter to break open a close Columbia Basin Conference contest. Alysha Fritz scored five of her team-high seven points in the second quarter, as the Bulldogs (2-5 CBC, 10-10 overall) outscored Weston-McEwen 12-9 in the period and got within 18-16 at halftime. Margie Beeler added five points and Alesha Freeman, Jessica Johnson and Raeanne Slaght scored four apiece for Culver.

North Lake 42, Gilchrist 24: GILCHRIST — Kendra Murphy led the Cowgirls with 22 points and 16 rebounds in a Mountain Valley League win. Charlene Berling led the Grizzlies (1-10 MVL, 4-16 overall) with 10 points. North Lake improved to 8-4 in league play and 10-10 overall.

Wrestling

Three Buffs in quarters at invite: COTTAGE GROVE — Madras’ Jace Oppenlander (126 pounds), Jarred Dupont (132) and Hayden Manu (285) each went 2-0 and advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective championship brackets at the Cottage Grove Invitational, which continues today. The White Buffaloes sit in 15th place at the 43-team tourney with 35 points. Thurston leads the field with 69 points. Gilchrist, which finished the first day with eight points, was highlighted by Nathan Heitzman, who went 3-1 at 132 and is still alive in the consolation bracket.
