Here’s an odd one: Ever wonder what the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ classic 1991 record “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” would sound like with a dub makeover?
Bend reggae-rock trio Subliminal will answer that question Saturday night at the Astro Lounge, where they will perform the album in its entirety. Maybe it’s a question no one asked, but it’s an answer that could be worth hearing.
For one thing, this is what Subliminal does. Starting off as a Sublime tribute act (hence the name), the trio has paid tribute to acts as varied as Nirvana, The Doors, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, filtering them all through a lens of spacey jams, stuttering rhythms and gnarled guitar leads.
If anyone doubts this group’s mettle, just check out its cover of The Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood” (retitled “This Bird Has Flown”) from its 2012 debut studio album “Rise Up” at subliminal2.bandcamp.com. Played in a convincing reggae two-step, the classic tune evolves into a dark jam by song’s end, fueled by guitarist Andy Jacobs’ fuzz-soaked leads.
Along the way, the band began writing original material. The rest of “Rise Up’s” sprawling, 18-track runtime is well worth hearing, bearing a strong resemblance to the band’s namesake while still finding room for hardcore punk blasts, heavy metal riffs and Motown-era soul.
And now they’ll apply the formula to the Peppers. Things are about to get white-boy funky, dub-style.
