Furious 1st half nets Bend 1st girls lacrosse win

A day after falling in its season opener, Bend was certainly determined to rebound with its first home game Tuesday evening.

Played at Mountain View, Bend built an early lead against Thurston and cruised to a 13-2 South League girls lacrosse win — a victory Bend surely needed in the season’s early going.

“It was really nice to have this game,” Bend coach Melanie Canna said. “We came in really strong and I feel like we really held that momentum throughout the game.”

Bend (1-1 overall) came out firing out of the gate, outscoring Thurston 6-0 in the first half before piling on seven more goals after the break.

“We came out really strong,” Canna added, “scoring twice right off the bat. The second half, we started slowing things down a lot, just spreading out the field more and getting more assisted goals.

“That was the big highlight: We had some really good passes into the center to set up shots.”

Ten players scored for Bend. Joren Fettig led the way with three goals on four shots while collecting five ground balls. Madeleine Meade scored twice for Bend, and Emma Beaver finished with one goal, one assist and five ground balls. Also scoring once for Bend were Remy Ogden, Mackenzie Lashley, Kaylene Oates, Patricia Chavira-Grever, Sahalie Levine, Kaitlyn Maestas and Gabby Arritola. Allyson Hand was credited with four saves in goal.
