A reggae and dancehall week in Bend

Reggae is the hot ticket this week at the Domino Room, with two shows from Simmer Down Sounds coming to the venue. Read on for details.

•  First up, Jamaican-born Jah9 and Italian band Mellow Mood bring the latest, cutting-edge sounds of the modern reggae revival to the venue Thursday night. Jah9, born Janine Cunningham (her stage name combines two significant Rastafarian concepts), calls her style “jazz on dub” in her website’s bio — she’s earned comparisons to Nina Simone, and even covered the jazz/soul singer’s “Misunderstood.” Jah9 also guested on Mellow Mood’s 2015 “2 the World” album, which finds the quintet building on the hard-hitting dub sound of singles such as “Dance Inna Babylon” and “Only You.”

Jah 9 and Mellow Mood, with Paolo DubFiles: 8 p.m. Thursday; $20 plus fees in advance, $25 at the door.

• Capleton may be best known to mainstream U.S. audiences for his brief sojourn with Def Jam Recordings, which yielded two albums in the mid-’90s that featured collaborations with U.S. rappers Q-Tip and Method Man. But Capleton — born Clifton George Bailey III — has been a force to be reckoned with in reggae circles since his late-’80s debut. His fiery, socially conscious lyrics and spitfire delivery (his stage name derives from the name of a lawyer in his hometown of Saint Mary Parish, Jamaica) are equally comfortable in the electronic-tinged dancehall style or the more organic reggae form. Along the way, he’s managed to keep up with both styles’ fickle trends, earning hits with songs such as “Alms House,” “Tour” and “Music is a Mission” (that title pretty much sums up Capleton’s raison d’être). He plays the Domino Room on Tuesday 6/13.

Capleton and The Prophecy Band: 8 p.m. Tuesday; $25 plus fees in advance, $30 at the door; Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend; bendticket.com, djcolonelsimmerdown.com or 541-408-4329.
