Deaths of note from around the world:
Kent Cooper, 91: a Washington architect for more than 50 years who played a vital role in the creation of the Vietnam and Korean War memorials on the Mall between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. Died Jan. 27 of pneumonia at a hospital in the District of Columbia.
Lerone Bennett Jr., 89: a historian and journalist who wrote extensively on race relations and black history and was a top editor at Ebony magazine for decades. Died Wednesday in Chicago of advanced vascular dementia.
Kevin Starr, 76: the former state librarian and professor at the University of Southern California whose encyclopedic, eloquent writings about California made him the premier chronicler of the Golden State’s history. Died Saturday night of a heart attack in San Francisco.
Kenneth Haigh, 86: the English actor whose starring role in the play “Look Back in Anger,” as well as his own blistering persona, defined the rebellious postwar “angry young man.” Died Feb. 4 in England; he had been in a nursing home since 2003.
