Tuition hikes — Oregon’s public universities would be required to take student input on tuition and fee hikes under a proposal advancing in the Legislature. Universities would be required to establish advisory boards that include students and members of underserved groups. The bill, House Bill 4141, was unanimously approved Thursday in the Senate and will go back to the House for final approval before heading to Gov. Kate Brown for her signature.

Home care workers — State officials will set minimum training standards for home care workers following approval of a measure in the Legislature. Under the measure, the state Department of Human Services will be required to develop minimum standards of training for in-home care workers, and to make the trainings available throughout the state by 2020. Workers affected by the measure include home care workers, who care for seniors and disabled adults, and personal support workers, who assist people with intellectual or developmental disabilities or mental illness. Currently, the state only requires that workers be 18 years old and able to pass a background check. The measure, Senate Bill 1534, was approved 57-2 in the House, sending it to the governor.

Extracurricular activities — Charter and home-school students will be able to attend music programs and other extracurricular activities at regular schools in Oregon. Both the House and Senate have approved a proposal to allow students in all grades to attend extracurricular activities, including speech and music programs, at state schools. The Senate voted 21-8 to approve the proposal Thursday, sending it to the governor.
