Birdies fly in battle for 1st at Pronghorn

Few were better than William Fleck at Pronghorn’s Nicklaus course Wednesday. In fact, only one player was better.

Fleck drained six birdies at the MVHS Pronghorn Invitational boys golf tournament to finish in a tie for second place with an even-par 72. Led by Fleck, who was bested only by Isaac Buerger’s seven birdies as the Ridgeview standout carded a 3-under 69, Summit recorded a 310 to top the 10-team standings.

Bend High was second with a 343, followed by Lake Oswego (344), Thurston (352) and Ridgeview (364).

The Storm’s Luke Simoneau, with a 78, and Jackson Murphy, with a 79, finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Summit’s Hayden Klein also placed in the top 10, tying for ninth with an 81.

Parker Krovisky and Tyler Hein paced the Lava Bears with matching 80s to tie for seventh place individually, and Bend’s Cort Brenner took 16th with an 89. Buerger, the reigning Class 5A state champ, posted a 4-under 32 on the back nine to lead Ridgeview, and teammate Luke Reynolds tied for 25th with a 96.

Cole Rupert tied for 17th with a 90 to lead host Mountain View, which was sixth as a team with a 382. Redmond, which was seventh with a 388, was led by Emmett Hagen, who tied for 23rd with a 95. Hogan Smith also tied for 23rd to help Crook County place eighth, and Tommy Rohde tied for ninth with an 81 to highlight La Pine, which was ninth as a team.

Baseball

Summit 1, Bend 0: Evan Scalley delivered an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn the Storm an Intermountain Conference walk-off win. Summit’s Drew Steelhammer walked nine but struck out four and allowed no hits in a complete game, outdueling Bend’s Marshall Davis, who went the distance and allowed just four hits while fanning 10. Logan Peterson was 2-for-3 for the Storm (8-1 IMC, 8-7 overall), and Steelhammer also had a hit. Bend (3-2, 7-6) entered the game ranked No. 9 in Class 5A.

Ridgeview 12, Mountain View 5: Nolan Merritt and Kade Nyman each had a double and two RBIs, and the Ravens used a six-run sixth inning to break away for an Intermountain Conference win. Logan Carson had two triples for Ridgeview (2-6 IMC, 3-13 overall), which snapped a six-game losing streak, and Nate Restivo had two hits and an RBI. Ryan Martini paced Mountain View (2-4, 2-13) with three hits, including two doubles, and an RBI. the Cougars’ Owen Aylward doubled and drove in two runs, and Shandon Malikowski had a double and an RBI.

Softball

Summit 10, Bend 9: Amanda Mellor, who injured her left shoulder in the sixth inning of the Intermountain Conference contest, singled to drive Janessa Mattison home with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Summit won for the second time in three games after a 0-10 start. Mattison’s single brought home Gianna Viola with the tying run earlier in the seventh. Bend had gone up 9-8 in the top of the seventh when Emily Smith doubled off the center-field fence and later scored from third base on a safety squeeze bunt by Olivia Dority. Mellor was hurt in the sixth inning in a collision at first base after hitting an RBI single that tied the game at 8-8. Mellor finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs for Summit (2-6 IMC, 2-11 overall). Mattison had two hits and scored two runs, Hailey Nelson hit two triples, and Grace Dealy scored three runs. For Bend (1-4, 4-10-1), Smith hit two doubles, and Emma Mone and Jessie Wiest both had two hits and scored two runs.

Ridgeview 4, Mountain View 0: Cougars pitcher Kayla Berg limited Class 5A No. 8-ranked Ridgeview to its fewest runs since a season-opening 5-3 loss at Hermiston, but the visiting Ravens prevailed in the Intermountain Conference matchup for their 13th straight win. Emma Cannon’s three-run double in the fifth inning broke a scoreless tie and was the biggest of six Ridgeview hits. Berg struck out eight while walking three in a complete game, but Mountain View committed seven errors. Natalie Hill tossed a four-hitter for the Ravens (8-0 IMC, 13-1 overall), striking out seven and walking none. Berg and Madison Newman had two hits apiece for the Cougars (1-4, 2-8).

Gladstone 11, Madras 1: GLADSTONE — Despite what coach Shawna McConnell called an improved performance from two days earlier, the White Buffaloes fell to the Tri-Valley Conference-leading Gladiators in another five-inning setback. Madras, which lost 16-0 at home against Gladstone on Monday, got a fourth-inning double from Arysta Pineda, who scored her team’s only run. Delaney Vibbert’s single was the only other hit for the Buffs (4-2 TVC, 8-5 overall).

Boys track and field

Multi-event winners pace Storm: Noah Turnbull recorded a personal and school record of 54 feet, 1 inch to win the shot put, added a victory in the discus, and Summit defeated visiting Mountain View 90-55 in a dual meet. The Storm’s Jack Normand won the high jump and the long jump and was second in the triple jump, and teammate Mitchell Burton took first in both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles. Mountain View’s Luke Schulz won the javelin and was third in both the shot put and the discus. Three other Cougars set PRs in victories: Nathan Myers in the 200 (23.37 seconds), Darien Devine in the 400 (54.10 seconds) and Levi Pichardo in the 800 (2:16.19).

Buffs cruise to victory: MADRAS — Tyler Anderson won the 800 and the 1,500 to help Madras record 117 points and finish atop the four-team standings. Gladstone was second with 73 points, followed by Molalla with 36 and Culver with 25. Also for the White Buffaloes, Dalton Waldow won the 200 in a personal-record 23.49 seconds and was second in the long jump, and Chad Thurby was first in the 100 in a PR 11.27 seconds. Culver’s Johan James ran a personal-best 20.60 seconds to win the 110 hurdles and placed third in both the 300 hurdles and the high jump.

Girls track and field

Storm race past Cougs: With Haley Smith winning the discus with a PR and school-record throw of 144-10 and adding a victory in the javelin and a runner-up finish in the shot put, Summit posted a 105.66-25.33 dual win over visiting Mountain View. Alexandra Walker (triple jump, long jump), Quin Fraley (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Emma Normand (100, 200) each had two wins for the Storm. The Cougars’ Cassidy Hughes won the shot put with a PR of 42-2½ and she was second in both the discus and the javelin. Brook Cummings won the 1,500 in a personal-best 5:28.44, and Emily Moore was first in the 3,000.

Four-event winner leads Culver: Irma Retano placed first in the 200, 400, 800 and 1,500 to help the Bulldogs take third with 49 points at a four-team meet. Gladstone won with 70.5 points, Molalla was second with 62.5 points, and Madras rounded out the team standings with 44 points. Culver’s Caytlynn Duff won the discus and was second in the shot put, and Hannah Orey was first in the 3,000. Olivia Symons won the long jump, with a PR leap of 16-6, and the 100 for Madras, and Laisha Alvarez finished second in the 400 and third in the 800.

Girls lacrosse

Sisters 10, Summit JV 8: Mia Cook and Kailey Huber each had three goals to lead the Outlaws to a nonconference win. Sisters (7-2) also got two goals apiece from Sydney Head and Ellie Cook. Lucy Jones had four goals for Summit (4-2), while Julia Burdsall, Hope Neibauer, Marse Freeman and Ashlyn Radatti each scored once.

Boys lacrosse

Bend 14, Summit 7: Luke Musgrave had three goals and an assist and won 14 faceoffs to help the Lava Bears snap a three-game skid with a High Desert Conference road win. Preston Sell led Bend (2-1 HDC, 5-7 overall) with six goals, Spencer Burgess added two goals and an assist, and Spencer Steckman scored once and had an assist. The Bears’ Kaden Davis and Nate Kelly each had a goal, and Levi Schwarz had 15 saves in goal. Jason Ward, Henry Bledsoe and Justin Radatti each scored twice for the Storm (1-1, 1-6), who dropped their fourth straight.
