If you’re a Deadhead, you’re probably already sold on the Joe Russo’s Almost Dead show happening at the Athletic Club of Bend on Sunday. If you’re not, you should still be excited if you’re a fan of live music. As the name suggests, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead is a Grateful Dead cover band — but put that aside for a second. Along with drummer/bandleader Russo and keyboardist Marco Benevento, who have long collaborated in the genre-bending Benevento/Russo Duo, the band features bassist Dave Dreiwitz, best known for his work with Ween and its offshoot The Dean Ween Band; guitarist Scott Metzger, who has worked with Dead bassist Phil Lesh, Shooter Jennings, John Mayer and more; and American Babies and Brothers Past leader Tom Hamilton. That’s a lot of talent to fit on one stage, and chances are you’ll find something to like within those five massive resumes (of which we’ve only scratched the surfaces here).
