Leah Richards scored in the 66th minute off an assist from Kaycee Brown to give Bend High a 1-0 victory over Lake Oswego on Saturday in the first round of the OSAA Class 6A girls soccer playoffs.

The win at 15th Street Field advances the Lava Bears to a second-round match Wednesday against No. 1 seed Jesuit, which drubbed Forest Grove 10-0 in another first-round game Saturday.

“They are a good team,” Bend coach Gavin Meyers said of No. 17 Lake Oswego. “We outplayed them most of the game. They made it hard for us to get shots off. We just kept pushing until it came through.”

The Lava Bears (11-3-1) will need their best effort to take down top-ranked Jesuit, which is 15-0 and has surrendered only one goal all season.

“We have a lot of speed up front and a solid back line, so I think we have a shot at the upset,” Meyers said.

Jesuit 2, Bend 1 (2OT): The Crusaders scored on a free kick about three minutes into the second 10-minute overtime to end the No. 21 Lava Bears’ season in heartbreaking fashion. Dario Scarselli scored in the first half on a penalty kick to give visiting Bend a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute. No. 12 Jesuit scored for a 1-1 tie with about 15 minutes left in regulation. “We played well,” said Bend coach Nils Eriksson. “They got a little bit of the upper hand in the second half. We had some chances at the end of the first overtime. But they are a great team, and we played toe-to-toe with them. We can’t be upset, it’s just sad it’s over.”

The visiting Bulldogs kept it close in all three games but could not overcome the No. 8 Wildcats. Culver coach Gabrielle Alley said an injury and a family emergency forced her team to make some late adjustments. “We had some people playing in positions they don’t normally play,” said Alley.
