1921 – 2018
Julian was born in Cleveland, OH on Dec. 23, 1921 to Julian A. Ralph, Sr. and Elva (Fay) Ralph. His mother passed away when he was 2 years old and he was raised in California by his grandmother. He graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1939. He worked in the area for a couple of years and when war broke out, he enlisted in what was at that time, the Army Air Corps. He served for 3 years as a top turret gunner and flight engineer on a B-24 Bomber. His time in the service, after his training, was spent in the Pacific Theater where he flew 49 combat missions. He was wounded during his last flight, was sent home to recover and was honorably discharged with a Purple Heart and 9 Air Medals.
He studied at the Los Angeles School of Art and later went to work for Northrop/Grumman Aircraft where he was a Technical Illustrator. He retired after 33 years and did some traveling, then settled in Arizona where he met Marilyn, his wife of 30 years. After she passed away in Oct. of 2012, he relocated to Bend to be close to family.
During his lifetime he was an accomplished artist, sculptor and builder. He also enjoyed the game of golf and he built and piloted experimental aircraft. His home in Arizona was of his own design and he supervised it’s construction.
Most important through his life, he was well-liked by all, he was caring towards others and always had money to give to those in need. His sense of humor was a gift and he was always fun to be with.
He was the last of his generation and he was my uncle who I was blessed to spend the last 7 years with. I will truly miss him.Arrangements have been entrusted to Autumn Funerals in Bend. Please visit the online registry for Julian at autumnfunerals.com.
